Can a woman enter the mosque during her menstrual days to give or attend lessons (dars wa tadrees)?
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
➊ During menstruation, it is not permissible for a woman to stay in the mosque for teaching or learning.
Evidence – Ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):
She said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding the houses of the Companions that opened into the mosque:
“Turn these houses away from the mosque.”
The Companions hesitated, hoping for a concession, but the Prophet ﷺ repeated:
“Turn these houses away from the mosque, for I do not permit the mosque for a menstruating woman nor for one in a state of janābah.”
(Abū Dāwūd – cited in Fiqh al-Sunnah, vol. 1, p. 59)
Ḥadīth of Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها):
She said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the courtyard of the mosque and called out loudly:
“The mosque is not lawful for a menstruating woman nor for one in a state of janābah.”
(Reported by Ibn Mājah and al-Ṭabarānī)
He said:
“Both aḥādīth indicate that staying and residing in the mosque is not permissible for the menstruating woman and the junub (one in sexual impurity). However, both are permitted to pass through, as Allah says: ﴿وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِي سَبِيلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا﴾ – ‘And not in a state of janābah except while passing through the way, until you have bathed.’”
✿ These aḥādīth clearly show that it is not permissible for a menstruating woman to remain in the mosque.
✿ According to the majority of scholars, a menstruating woman also may not recite Qur’an in her home.
✿ Therefore, she is not permitted to sit in the mosque for teaching or giving lessons during menstruation.
