The Ruling on a Muslim’s Slaughtered Animal and Its Shar‘i Status

Authored by: Dr. Muhammad Zia ur-Rahman Azmi رحمه الله

❀ Question:

What is the ruling on meat sold in markets that has been slaughtered by Muslims, whether they slaughter it themselves or it comes to them already slaughtered?

✔ Answer:

The default principle regarding a Muslim is to think well of him in all matters, unless evidence proves otherwise.

Therefore, when a Muslim slaughters an animal, it is to be assumed that he has followed the proper Islamic guidelines, including:

✔ Reciting Bismillah,
✔ Observing the correct method of slaughter.

Thus, his slaughtered meat is lawful to eat.
It is narrated in the Hadith of Aisha (رضي الله عنها) that some people said:

“O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! A group brings meat to us, and we are not sure whether they mentioned Allah's name over it or not?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Say Bismillah yourselves and eat it.”

Lady Aisha (رضي الله عنها) added:
“They were newly converted to Islam.”
