The Religious Class’s Effective Response Against the Trial of Western Ideologies

A critical look at the intellectual and practical failure in facing the challenge of apostasy triggered by Western thought

❖ Present Circumstances: The Helplessness of the Religious Class

The trial of apostasy (فتنہ ارتداد) arising from Western ideologies has evoked varied responses from the religious community, yet these responses lack effectiveness and success. This is not merely a case of inaction, but a sign of diminishing religious zeal and moral concern, which historically were central in responding to the challenges of other religions.

❖ Various Conditions Within the Religious Class

Ignorance

  • Many are entirely unaware of this intellectual crisis.
  • They remain confined to ritual worship in local mosques, and merely get angry at fellow Muslims' deviations, labeling them as "irreligious".
  • They fail to understand how someone can perform prayer while holding no belief in Islamic doctrine.

② Indifference

  • Some are aware of the issue but dismiss it as insignificant.
  • Instead of responding rationally, they rely on baseless claims of Islam’s superiority.
  • They fail to grasp the urgency or the scale of the crisis.

③ Complacency and Wishful Thinking

  • Some acknowledge the seriousness but remain silent out of helplessness.
  • They rely on miraculous divine intervention, whereas the Qur’an declares:

"Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves."
(Surah Ar-Ra'd: 11)

Ineffective and Erroneous Rebuttals

  • Some attempted to refute Western ideas, but these efforts lacked:
    Depth of argument
    Proper evidence
    ➤ Targeting the right audience
  • Often, they misidentified the real ideas—mistaking non-Islamic notions for Islamic ones, and vice versa.

⑤ Taunts from Outsiders

  • Secular and Western-oriented critics claim that Muslims have failed to respond to their philosophies and objections.
  • American author Professor Wilfred Cantwell Smith observed that today's Muslims have detached from intellectual engagement, unlike the scholars of past centuries who actively debated theological and philosophical objections.

❖ Lack of Understanding Among Western-Educated Muslims

  • The Western-educated class mimics the West without truly understanding its philosophies or civilizational implications.
  • There is widespread disinterest in examining the works and ideas of major Western thinkers.

✦ A Few Examples:

John Stuart Mill is praised as a defender of liberty, yet his principles excluded freedom for Asians and Africans.
Karl Marx, in practice, held a mocking attitude toward the working class.
Thomas Jefferson is celebrated as a reformer, but his abuse of slaves is conveniently ignored.

❖ A Quotation from Ustadh Ahmad Javed

“Not understanding the West is the gravest crime — and its greatest perpetrators are not the religious scholars, but the Western-educated elite.”

❖ Conclusion

The trial of apostasy is not merely about the spread of Western ideologies, but a reflection of our intellectual, philosophical, and practical failures.

☑ The religious class must recognize its duty and face this ideological onslaught with solid knowledge, logic, and a renewed sense of purpose.
☑ Mere rituals and passive attitudes are insufficient. What is needed is an informed, strategic, and courageous intellectual resistance.
