The Relationship Between the Worship of Jinn and Idolatry

Question:
If it is said that they used to worship idols, then how can it be said that they worshipped the jinn?

Answer:
It is because they worshipped idols only in obedience to the jinn. Such people are like a man who set out on a journey with others but lost his way. The devils and jinn bewildered him and led him astray on the earth, while his companions remained firm upon the straight path and kept calling him back to it:

كَالَّذِي اسْتَهْوَتْهُ الشَّيَاطِينُ فِي الْأَرْضِ حَيْرَانَ لَهُ أَصْحَابٌ
"Like the one whom the devils have led astray in the earth, bewildered, while he has companions..." [Al-An‘ām: 71]

This is the one who does not accept the guidance of Allah, but instead obeys Satan and commits acts of disobedience on the earth. He departs from the truth and becomes misguided, for indeed the guidance is only the guidance of Allah, and whatever the jinn (devils) call towards is misguidance.

The third evidence is the statement of Allah, the Exalted:

أَلَمْ أَعْهَدْ إِلَيْكُمْ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوا الشَّيْطَانَ ۖ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ ﴿٦٠﴾
"Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you should not worship Satan? Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy." [Yā Sīn: 60]

This is a rebuke from Allah to those among the children of Adam who disbelieved, followed Satan even though he is their clear enemy, and disobeyed Allah, despite Allah being the One who created them and provides for them.
