Question:
Does the evil eye (nazar) have any reality?

Answer:
According to Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamāʿah, the evil eye is real. Its reality is affirmed in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and there is consensus (ijmāʿ) of the Ummah on this matter.

  • Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
    العين حق
    “The evil eye is real.”
    (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5740, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2187)

❀ Imām al-Qurṭubī رحمه الله (d. 671H) said:
هذا قول علماء الأمة، ومذهب أهل السنة، وقد أنكرته طوائف من المبتدعة، وهم محجوجون بالسنة وإجماع علماء هذه الأمة، وبما يشاهد من ذلك فى الوجود.
“This is the belief of the scholars of the Ummah and the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah. Some sects of the innovators denied it, but they are refuted by the Sunnah, the consensus of the scholars of this Ummah, and by observable reality itself.”
(Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī 9/226)
