The topic of the present article is Taqwā (piety/God-consciousness). In this article, first the tremendous importance of taqwā is clarified in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Then the reality and meaning of taqwā are explained. After that, the qualities of the muttaqīn (the pious) are mentioned, and finally the great benefits and fruits of taqwā are presented in detail. This article is not arranged in the style of a Friday sermon, but rather as a complete reformative and scholarly piece, so that the reader may understand the reality of taqwā and strive to adopt it in practical life.
Each of these noble verses begins with the command of taqwā, which is a clear proof that taqwā holds exceptional importance with Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ.
[Āl ʿImrān: 3:102]
Translation:
O you who believe! Fear Allah as He has the right to be feared, and do not die except while you are Muslims.
﴿وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ الَّذِیْ تَسَآئَ لُوْنَ بِہٖ وَالْاَرْحَامَ﴾
[an-Nisā’: 4:1]
Translation:
O mankind! Fear your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the two spread many men and women. And fear Allah in whose Name you ask one another, and (be mindful of) the rights of kinship. Surely Allah is Ever-Watching over you.
﴿یُصْلِحْ لَکُمْ اَعْمَالَکُمْ وَیَغْفِرْلَکُمْ ذُنُوْبَکُمْ﴾
[al-Aḥzāb: 33:70–71]
Translation:
O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of uprightness. He will rectify your deeds for you and forgive your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger ﷺ has indeed attained a great success.
These verses clearly show that taqwā is a fundamental means for faith, rectification of deeds, and forgiveness of sins.
﴿وَلَقَدْ وَصَّیْنَا الَّذِیْنَ اُوْتُوا الْکِتٰبَ مِنْ قَبْلِکُمْ وَاِیَّاکُمْ اَنِ اتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ﴾
[an-Nisā’: 4:131]
Translation:
And indeed, We advised those who were given the Scripture before you, and you as well, that you must fear Allah.
This verse proves that taqwā has been the shared and foundational message of all heavenly religions.
❀ Prophet Nūḥ عليه السلام
﴿اَلَا تَتَّقُوْنَ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ﴾
[ash-Shuʿarā’: 26:105–109]
Translation:
Will you not fear Allah? So fear Allah and obey me.
❀ Prophet Hūd عليه السلام
﴿اَلَا تَتَّقُوْنَ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ﴾
[ash-Shuʿarā’: 26:123–126]
Translation:
Will you not fear (Allah)? So fear Allah and obey me.
❀ Ṣāliḥ, Lūṭ, and Shuʿayb عليهم السلام
In the call of all these Prophets, the same words were repeated:
﴿فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ﴾
[ash-Shuʿarā’: 26:141–179]
Translation:
So fear Allah and obey me.
❀ ʿĪsā عليه السلام
﴿فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ﴾
[az-Zukhruf: 43:63]
Translation:
So fear Allah and obey me.
These verses make it clear that taqwā remained the central and foundational point in every Prophet’s call.
﴿اَرَئَیْتَ اِنْ کَانَ عَلَی الْہُدٰی اَوْ اَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوٰی﴾
[al-ʿAlaq: 96:11–12]
Translation:
Tell me—what if he (the servant Muḥammad ﷺ) is upon guidance and commands taqwā?
This shows that commanding taqwā was a fundamental pillar of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ’s call.
((صَلَّی بِنَا رَسُولُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ الصُّبْحَ، فَوَعَظَنَا مَوْعِظَۃً بَلِیْغَۃً… فَقَالَ: أُوْصِیْکُمْ بِتَقْوَی اللّٰہِ…))
Translation:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the Fajr prayer, then delivered such a powerful admonition that tears flowed from our eyes and hearts trembled. We said: O Messenger of Allah! This seems like the advice of one bidding farewell, so advise us. He ﷺ said: “I advise you to fear Allah.”
(اِتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ رَبَّکُمْ، وَصَلُّوا خَمْسَکُمْ، وَصُوْمُوا شَہْرَکُمْ، وَأَدُّوا زَکَاۃَ أَمْوَالِکُمْ، وَأَطِیْعُوا ذَا أَمْرِکُمْ تَدْخُلُوا جَنَّۃَ رَبِّکُمْ)
Translation:
Fear Allah, your Lord; establish your five prayers; fast your month (Ramaḍān); pay the zakāh of your wealth; and obey those in authority over you—you will enter the Paradise of your Lord.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
(مَنْ یَّأْخُذُ عَنِّی ہٰؤُلَاءِ الْکَلِمَاتِ…)
“Who will take these words from me…”
Then he mentioned five matters:
(اِتَّقِ الْمَحَارِمَ تَکُنْ أَعْبَدَ النَّاسِ)
“Avoid the forbidden things, and you will be the most devoted worshipper among people.”
(وَارْضَ بِمَا قَسَمَ اللّٰہُ لَکَ تَکُنْ أَغْنَی النَّاسِ)
“Be pleased with what Allah has apportioned for you, and you will be the richest of people.”
(وَأَحْسِنْ إِلٰی جَارِکَ تَکُنْ مُؤْمِنًا)
“Be good to your neighbor, and you will be a true believer.”
(وَأَحِبَّ لِلنَّاسِ مَا تُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِکَ تَکُنْ مُسْلِمًا)
“Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be a true Muslim.”
(وَلَا تُکْثِرِ الضَّحِکَ…)
“Do not laugh excessively, for excessive laughter kills the heart.”
Special counsel to Abū Dharr رضي الله عنه
(اِتَّقِ اللّٰہَ حَیْثُمَا کُنْتَ…)
Translation:
Fear Allah wherever you may be; follow up a bad deed with a good deed—it will erase it; and treat people with good character.
(اَللّٰہُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِی تَقْوَاہَا…)
Translation:
O Allah! Grant my soul its taqwā and purify it; You are the best of those who purify. You are its Guardian and its Protector.
By now, the great importance of taqwā has become clear in the light of the Qur’an and ḥadīth. Now the natural question arises: What is taqwā? What is its reality and true meaning? Let us understand it in detail.
◈ adopting protection
◈ abstaining
◈ placing a barrier between oneself and something dangerous
In Islamic terminology, taqwā means that a servant places the fear of Allah as a protective wall between himself and disobedience to Allah Almighty.
❀ that a person protects his entire body from sins
❀ that he avoids disobedience to Allah both outwardly and inwardly
❀ that he remains fearful of Allah in every state—public and private
A poet expressed this meaning beautifully:
خَلِّ الذُّنُوبَ صَغِیْرَہَا وَکَبِیْرَہَا فَہُوَ التُّقٰی
وَاصْنَعْ کَمَاشٍ فَوْقَ أَرْضِ الشَّوْکِ یَحْذَرُ مَا یَرَی
Translation:
Leave all sins, small and great—this is taqwā.
And walk with caution like one who walks over thorny ground, careful of every step.
“Whoever wishes to fear Allah and be saved from His punishment should especially safeguard five limbs:
the eye, the ear, the tongue, the heart, and the stomach.
When these are protected, it is hoped that the rest of the limbs will also be protected, and thus he will attain comprehensive taqwā.”
Likewise, Sahl bin ʿAbdullāh رحمه الله said:
(مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ تَصِحَّ لَہُ التَّقْوَی فَلْیَتْرُکِ الذُّنُوبَ کُلَّہَا)
“Whoever wishes his taqwā to be sound must abandon all sins.”
Translation:
Taqwā is:
✔ fearing the Majestic (Allah),
✔ acting upon the Revelation (Qur’an and Sunnah),
✔ preparing for the Day of departure (death),
✔ and being content with little.
﴿اتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ حَقَّ تُقٰتِہٖ﴾
[Āl ʿImrān: 3:102]
He said:
(أَنْ یُّطَاعَ فَلَا یُعْصٰی، وَیُذْکَرَ فَلَا یُنْسٰی، وَیُشْکَرَ فَلَا یُکْفَر)
Translation:
To fear Allah as He deserves means:
✔ He is obeyed and not disobeyed,
✔ He is remembered and not forgotten,
✔ He is thanked and not shown ingratitude.
True taqwā is not merely appearing righteous in front of people; rather, real taqwā is what manifests in solitude.
When a person is:
◈ alone
◈ with no observer
◈ with all means of sin available
◈ while Shayṭān beautifies evil
◈ and he abandons the sin only due to fear of Allah—this is real taqwā.
﴿الَّذِیْنَ یَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّہُم بِالْغَیْبِ وَہُم مِّنَ السَّاعَۃِ مُشْفِقُونَ﴾
[al-Anbiyā’: 21:49]
Translation:
They are those who fear their Lord unseen (in private) and are apprehensive of the Hour.
And He says:
﴿اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ یَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّہُمْ بِالْغَیْبِ لَہُمْ مَّغْفِرَۃٌ وَّاَجْرٌ کَبِیْرٌ﴾
[al-Mulk: 67:12]
Translation:
Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen—for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
And He says:
﴿إِنَّمَا تُنذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّکْرَ وَخَشِیَ الرَّحْمٰنَ بِالْغَیْبِ﴾
[Yā-Sīn: 36:11]
Translation:
You can only warn the one who follows the Reminder and fears the Most Merciful unseen.
Thawbān رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(لَأَعْلَمَنَّ أَقْوَامًا مِنْ أُمَّتِی یَأْتُوْنَ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ بِحَسَنَاتٍ أَمْثَالَ جِبَالِ تِہَامَۃَ…)
Translation:
I will surely know people from my Ummah who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihāmah, but Allah will turn them into scattered dust—because they would commit what Allah has forbidden in private.
After understanding the reality of taqwā, it is extremely necessary to know: What qualities of the muttaqīn (the pious) has the Qur’an described? For taqwā is not something vague—rather, it has clear traits and practical signs by which a person becomes among the muttaqīn.
﴿ذٰلِکَ الْکِتٰبُ لَا رَیْبَ فِیْہِ ھُدًی لِّلْمُتَّقِیْنَ﴾
[al-Baqarah: 2:2]
Translation:
This is the Book—there is no doubt in it—guidance for the muttaqīn.
Then Allah mentions five foundational qualities of the muttaqīn:
﴿الَّذِیْنَ یُؤمِنُوْنَ بِالْغَیْبِ﴾
Translation:
Those who believe in the unseen—meaning:
◈ belief in Allah
◈ belief in the angels
◈ belief in the Messengers
◈ belief in Paradise and Hell
❷ Establishing Prayer
﴿وَیُقِیْمُوْنَ الصَّلٰوۃَ﴾
Translation:
And they establish prayer—meaning:
◈ with punctuality
◈ with humility and reverence
◈ with observance of pillars and conditions
❸ Spending from What Allah Has Provided
﴿وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنٰھُمْ یُنْفِقُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
And they spend from what We have provided them—meaning:
◈ zakāh
◈ charity
◈ donations
◈ spending in the path of Allah
❹ Belief in All Revealed Scriptures
﴿وَالَّذِیْنَ یُؤمِنُوْنَ بِمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَیْکَ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ مِنْ قَبْلِکَ﴾
Translation:
And they believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you.
❺ Certainty in the Hereafter
﴿وَبِالْاٰخِرَۃِ ھُمْ یُوْقِنُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
And they have certainty in the Hereafter—meaning:
◈ death
◈ the grave
◈ resurrection
◈ reckoning
◈ Paradise and Hell
Result of these qualities
﴿اُولٰٓئِکَ عَلٰی ھُدًی مِّنْ رَّبِّھِمْ وَاُولٰٓئِکَ ھُمُ الْمُفْلِحُوْنَ﴾
[al-Baqarah: 2:5]
Translation:
They are upon guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.
﴿لَیْسَ الْبِرَّ اَنْ تُوَلُّوْا وُجُوْھَکُمْ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ…﴾
[al-Baqarah: 2:177]
Translation:
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the Prophets…
In this verse, Allah clarified that righteousness is not merely outward acts; rather, it is a combination of great beliefs and practical qualities—and the possessors of these qualities are the true muttaqīn.
Qualities of the muttaqīn mentioned in this verse:
① belief in Allah, the Hereafter, angels, the Book, and the Prophets
② spending wealth (despite loving it) in Allah’s path
③ establishing prayer
④ giving zakāh
⑤ fulfilling promises
⑥ patience in hardship, illness, and during battle
Then Allah says:
﴿اُولٰٓئِکَ الَّذِیْنَ صَدَقُوْا وَاُولٰٓئِکَ ھُمُ الْمُتَّقُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
Those are the ones who are truthful, and those are the ones who are the muttaqīn.
﴿وَسَارِعُوْٓا اِلٰی مَغْفِرَۃٍ مِّنْ رَّبِّکُمْ وَجَنَّۃٍ…﴾
[Āl ʿImrān: 3:133–136]
Notable qualities of the muttaqīn:
❀ spending in prosperity and adversity
❀ restraining anger
❀ forgiving people
❀ repenting immediately after a sin
❀ not persisting knowingly upon sin
Then Allah says:
﴿اُولٰٓئِکَ جَزَآؤُھُمْ مَّغْفِرَۃٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّھِمْ وَجَنّٰتٌ﴾
Translation:
For such people, their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens.
Now that the importance of taqwā, its reality, and the qualities of the muttaqīn have become clear, it is appropriate to explain the great benefits and fruits of taqwā in detail in the light of the Qur’an. The truth is: every good of this world and the Hereafter is connected to taqwā.
[aṭ-Ṭalāq: 65:2–3]
Translation:
Whoever fears Allah—He will make for him a way out, and will provide for him from where he does not even expect.
[aṭ-Ṭalāq: 65:4]
Translation:
Whoever fears Allah—He will make ease for him in his affairs.
[aṭ-Ṭalāq: 65:5]
Translation:
Whoever fears Allah—He will erase his sins and grant him a tremendous reward.
[al-Anfāl: 8:29]
Translation:
O you who believe! If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (furqān) to distinguish between truth and falsehood.
(The same verse also contains a promise of forgiveness.)
[at-Tawbah: 9:7]
Translation:
Indeed, Allah loves the muttaqīn.
[an-Naḥl: 16:128]
Translation:
Surely Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good.
[al-Mā’idah: 5:27]
Translation:
Allah accepts deeds only from the muttaqīn.
[Yūnus: 10:63–64]
Translation:
For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.
[an-Naml: 27:53]
Translation:
And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.
[al-Aʿrāf: 7:156]
Translation:
I will decree My mercy for those who fear Allah.
After worldly benefits, let us see what Allah Almighty has prepared for the muttaqīn in the Hereafter. The reality is that the Hereafter, in its full sense, is for the muttaqīn.
[az-Zukhruf: 43:35]
Translation:
And the Hereafter with your Lord is only for the muttaqīn.
[al-Qaṣaṣ: 28:83]
Translation:
That home of the Hereafter—We assign it to those who do not seek arrogance on earth nor corruption, and the best end is for the muttaqīn.
[Maryam: 19:71–72]
Translation:
There is none of you except that he will pass over it (Hell)—this is a decree firmly decided by your Lord. Then We will save those who feared Allah, and We will leave the wrongdoers therein.
[ad-Dukhān: 44:51–52]
Translation:
Indeed, the muttaqīn will be in a secure station—among gardens and springs.
And He says:
﴿وَسِیْقَ الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا رَبَّھُمْ اِلَی الْجَنَّۃِ زُمَرًا﴾
[az-Zumar: 39:73–74]
Translation:
And those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups.
[ar-Raḥmān: 55:46]
Translation:
And for the one who feared standing before his Lord—there are two gardens.
[Maryam: 19:63]
Translation:
That is the Paradise which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were muttaqīn.
Āmīn yā Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn.

The Importance of Taqwā
① The Special Mention of Taqwā in the Sunnah Khutbah
It is well-known among the scholars that the Noble Prophet ﷺ would always recite three specific verses in Khutbat al-Ḥājah, as narrated from Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh bin Masʿūd رضي الله عنه and others:

The First Verse

② Taqwā Was Commanded to All Nations
Allah Almighty did not command only this Ummah, but also emphasized taqwā to the previous nations:﴿وَلَقَدْ وَصَّیْنَا الَّذِیْنَ اُوْتُوا الْکِتٰبَ مِنْ قَبْلِکُمْ وَاِیَّاکُمْ اَنِ اتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ﴾
Translation:

In the Qur’an, the summary of the دعوت (call) of many Prophets عليهم السلام is mentioned, and everywhere taqwā is made the foundation:❀ Prophet Nūḥ عليه السلام
﴿اَلَا تَتَّقُوْنَ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ﴾
Translation:
Will you not fear Allah? So fear Allah and obey me.
❀ Prophet Hūd عليه السلام
﴿اَلَا تَتَّقُوْنَ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ﴾
Translation:
Will you not fear (Allah)? So fear Allah and obey me.

The Importance of Taqwā in the Prophet ﷺ’s Call and Advice
After the Prophets عليهم السلام, if we reflect upon the دعوت (call), counsel, and وصیتیں (advices) of the Leader of the Prophets, Muḥammad ﷺ, it becomes evident that he too gave extraordinary importance to taqwā and repeatedly urged it.① The Prophet ﷺ’s Call and Taqwā in the Qur’an
Allah Almighty said in the early chapters of the Qur’an regarding the Noble Prophet ﷺ:﴿اَرَئَیْتَ اِنْ کَانَ عَلَی الْہُدٰی اَوْ اَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوٰی﴾
Translation:
Tell me—what if he (the servant Muḥammad ﷺ) is upon guidance and commands taqwā?
This shows that commanding taqwā was a fundamental pillar of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ’s call.
② Emphasis on Taqwā in the Final Advices
Sayyidunā al-ʿIrbāḍ bin Sāriyah رضي الله عنه narrates:((صَلَّی بِنَا رَسُولُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ الصُّبْحَ، فَوَعَظَنَا مَوْعِظَۃً بَلِیْغَۃً… فَقَالَ: أُوْصِیْکُمْ بِتَقْوَی اللّٰہِ…))

③ The First Advice at Ḥajjatu’l-Wadāʿ: Taqwā
Sayyidunā Abū Umāmah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon at Minā on the Day of Sacrifice and said:(اِتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ رَبَّکُمْ، وَصَلُّوا خَمْسَکُمْ، وَصُوْمُوا شَہْرَکُمْ، وَأَدُّوا زَکَاۃَ أَمْوَالِکُمْ، وَأَطِیْعُوا ذَا أَمْرِکُمْ تَدْخُلُوا جَنَّۃَ رَبِّکُمْ)

Fear Allah, your Lord; establish your five prayers; fast your month (Ramaḍān); pay the zakāh of your wealth; and obey those in authority over you—you will enter the Paradise of your Lord.
④ Special Counsel of Taqwā to the Companions
Narration of Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنهThe Prophet ﷺ said:
(مَنْ یَّأْخُذُ عَنِّی ہٰؤُلَاءِ الْکَلِمَاتِ…)
“Who will take these words from me…”
Then he mentioned five matters:
“Avoid the forbidden things, and you will be the most devoted worshipper among people.”
“Be pleased with what Allah has apportioned for you, and you will be the richest of people.”
“Be good to your neighbor, and you will be a true believer.”
“Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be a true Muslim.”
“Do not laugh excessively, for excessive laughter kills the heart.”

(اِتَّقِ اللّٰہَ حَیْثُمَا کُنْتَ…)

Fear Allah wherever you may be; follow up a bad deed with a good deed—it will erase it; and treat people with good character.
⑤ The Prophet ﷺ’s Special Supplication
The Prophet ﷺ would also supplicate for taqwā:(اَللّٰہُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِی تَقْوَاہَا…)

Translation:
O Allah! Grant my soul its taqwā and purify it; You are the best of those who purify. You are its Guardian and its Protector.
The Reality of Taqwā
Dear brothers!By now, the great importance of taqwā has become clear in the light of the Qur’an and ḥadīth. Now the natural question arises: What is taqwā? What is its reality and true meaning? Let us understand it in detail.
The Linguistic Meaning of Taqwā
The word taqwā is derived from the Arabic root wiqāyah, which means:◈ adopting protection
◈ abstaining
◈ placing a barrier between oneself and something dangerous
In Islamic terminology, taqwā means that a servant places the fear of Allah as a protective wall between himself and disobedience to Allah Almighty.
A Comprehensive Definition of Taqwā
The essence of taqwā is:❀ that a person protects his entire body from sins
❀ that he avoids disobedience to Allah both outwardly and inwardly
❀ that he remains fearful of Allah in every state—public and private
A poet expressed this meaning beautifully:
خَلِّ الذُّنُوبَ صَغِیْرَہَا وَکَبِیْرَہَا فَہُوَ التُّقٰی
وَاصْنَعْ کَمَاشٍ فَوْقَ أَرْضِ الشَّوْکِ یَحْذَرُ مَا یَرَی
Translation:
Leave all sins, small and great—this is taqwā.
And walk with caution like one who walks over thorny ground, careful of every step.
Taqwā and the Human Limbs
Imām al-Ghazālī رحمه الله said:“Whoever wishes to fear Allah and be saved from His punishment should especially safeguard five limbs:
the eye, the ear, the tongue, the heart, and the stomach.
When these are protected, it is hoped that the rest of the limbs will also be protected, and thus he will attain comprehensive taqwā.”
Likewise, Sahl bin ʿAbdullāh رحمه الله said:
(مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ تَصِحَّ لَہُ التَّقْوَی فَلْیَتْرُکِ الذُّنُوبَ کُلَّہَا)
“Whoever wishes his taqwā to be sound must abandon all sins.”
Taqwā According to the Companions
Statement of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه
(اَلتَّقْوَی ہِیَ الْخَوْفُ مِنَ الْجَلِیْلِ، وَالْعَمَلُ بِالتَّنْزِیْلِ، وَالْاِسْتِعْدَادُ لِیَوْمِ الرَّحِیْلِ، وَالْقَنَاعَۃُ بِالْقَلِیْلِ)Translation:
Taqwā is:
✔ fearing the Majestic (Allah),
✔ acting upon the Revelation (Qur’an and Sunnah),
✔ preparing for the Day of departure (death),
✔ and being content with little.
Explanation of Ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه
Regarding Allah’s saying:﴿اتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ حَقَّ تُقٰتِہٖ﴾
He said:
(أَنْ یُّطَاعَ فَلَا یُعْصٰی، وَیُذْکَرَ فَلَا یُنْسٰی، وَیُشْکَرَ فَلَا یُکْفَر)
Translation:
To fear Allah as He deserves means:
✔ He is obeyed and not disobeyed,
✔ He is remembered and not forgotten,
✔ He is thanked and not shown ingratitude.
Taqwā in Private — The True Sign of Real Taqwā
Brothers in Islam!True taqwā is not merely appearing righteous in front of people; rather, real taqwā is what manifests in solitude.
When a person is:
◈ alone
◈ with no observer
◈ with all means of sin available
◈ while Shayṭān beautifies evil
◈ and he abandons the sin only due to fear of Allah—this is real taqwā.
Qur’anic Testimony: Those Who Fear Allah in Secret Are the Muttaqīn
Allah Almighty says:﴿الَّذِیْنَ یَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّہُم بِالْغَیْبِ وَہُم مِّنَ السَّاعَۃِ مُشْفِقُونَ﴾
Translation:
They are those who fear their Lord unseen (in private) and are apprehensive of the Hour.
And He says:
﴿اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ یَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّہُمْ بِالْغَیْبِ لَہُمْ مَّغْفِرَۃٌ وَّاَجْرٌ کَبِیْرٌ﴾
Translation:
Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen—for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
And He says:
﴿إِنَّمَا تُنذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّکْرَ وَخَشِیَ الرَّحْمٰنَ بِالْغَیْبِ﴾
Translation:
You can only warn the one who follows the Reminder and fears the Most Merciful unseen.
The Consequence of Sins in Private
Those who appear righteous before people but commit sins in private have been warned severely by the Prophet ﷺ.Thawbān رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(لَأَعْلَمَنَّ أَقْوَامًا مِنْ أُمَّتِی یَأْتُوْنَ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ بِحَسَنَاتٍ أَمْثَالَ جِبَالِ تِہَامَۃَ…)
Reference: Sunan Ibn Mājah: 4245
(Authenticated by al-Albānī)Translation:
I will surely know people from my Ummah who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihāmah, but Allah will turn them into scattered dust—because they would commit what Allah has forbidden in private.
Qualities of the Muttaqīn in the Light of the Qur’an
Dear readers!After understanding the reality of taqwā, it is extremely necessary to know: What qualities of the muttaqīn (the pious) has the Qur’an described? For taqwā is not something vague—rather, it has clear traits and practical signs by which a person becomes among the muttaqīn.
① The Qur’an Is Guidance for the Muttaqīn
Allah Almighty says:﴿ذٰلِکَ الْکِتٰبُ لَا رَیْبَ فِیْہِ ھُدًی لِّلْمُتَّقِیْنَ﴾
Translation:
This is the Book—there is no doubt in it—guidance for the muttaqīn.
Then Allah mentions five foundational qualities of the muttaqīn:
② Five Fundamental Qualities of the Muttaqīn
❶ Belief in the Unseen﴿الَّذِیْنَ یُؤمِنُوْنَ بِالْغَیْبِ﴾
Translation:
Those who believe in the unseen—meaning:
◈ belief in Allah
◈ belief in the angels
◈ belief in the Messengers
◈ belief in Paradise and Hell
❷ Establishing Prayer
﴿وَیُقِیْمُوْنَ الصَّلٰوۃَ﴾
Translation:
And they establish prayer—meaning:
◈ with punctuality
◈ with humility and reverence
◈ with observance of pillars and conditions
❸ Spending from What Allah Has Provided
﴿وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنٰھُمْ یُنْفِقُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
And they spend from what We have provided them—meaning:
◈ zakāh
◈ charity
◈ donations
◈ spending in the path of Allah
❹ Belief in All Revealed Scriptures
﴿وَالَّذِیْنَ یُؤمِنُوْنَ بِمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَیْکَ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ مِنْ قَبْلِکَ﴾
Translation:
And they believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you.
❺ Certainty in the Hereafter
﴿وَبِالْاٰخِرَۃِ ھُمْ یُوْقِنُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
And they have certainty in the Hereafter—meaning:
◈ death
◈ the grave
◈ resurrection
◈ reckoning
◈ Paradise and Hell
Result of these qualities
﴿اُولٰٓئِکَ عَلٰی ھُدًی مِّنْ رَّبِّھِمْ وَاُولٰٓئِکَ ھُمُ الْمُفْلِحُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
They are upon guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.
A Comprehensive Definition of Righteousness and Taqwā
Allah Almighty says:﴿لَیْسَ الْبِرَّ اَنْ تُوَلُّوْا وُجُوْھَکُمْ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ…﴾
Translation:
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the Prophets…
In this verse, Allah clarified that righteousness is not merely outward acts; rather, it is a combination of great beliefs and practical qualities—and the possessors of these qualities are the true muttaqīn.
Qualities of the muttaqīn mentioned in this verse:
① belief in Allah, the Hereafter, angels, the Book, and the Prophets
② spending wealth (despite loving it) in Allah’s path
③ establishing prayer
④ giving zakāh
⑤ fulfilling promises
⑥ patience in hardship, illness, and during battle
Then Allah says:
﴿اُولٰٓئِکَ الَّذِیْنَ صَدَقُوْا وَاُولٰٓئِکَ ھُمُ الْمُتَّقُوْنَ﴾
Translation:
Those are the ones who are truthful, and those are the ones who are the muttaqīn.
More Qualities of the Muttaqīn (Āl ʿImrān)
Allah Almighty says:﴿وَسَارِعُوْٓا اِلٰی مَغْفِرَۃٍ مِّنْ رَّبِّکُمْ وَجَنَّۃٍ…﴾
Notable qualities of the muttaqīn:
❀ spending in prosperity and adversity
❀ restraining anger
❀ forgiving people
❀ repenting immediately after a sin
❀ not persisting knowingly upon sin
Then Allah says:
﴿اُولٰٓئِکَ جَزَآؤُھُمْ مَّغْفِرَۃٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّھِمْ وَجَنّٰتٌ﴾
Translation:
For such people, their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens.
Benefits and Fruits of Taqwā
Respected readers!Now that the importance of taqwā, its reality, and the qualities of the muttaqīn have become clear, it is appropriate to explain the great benefits and fruits of taqwā in detail in the light of the Qur’an. The truth is: every good of this world and the Hereafter is connected to taqwā.
① Relief from Difficulties and Unexpected Provision
﴿وَمَنْ یَّتَّقِ اللّٰہَ یَجْعَلْ لَّہُ مَخْرَجًا وَیَرْزُقْہُ مِنْ حَیْثُ لَا یَحْتَسِبُ﴾Translation:
Whoever fears Allah—He will make for him a way out, and will provide for him from where he does not even expect.
② Ease in Every Matter
﴿وَمَنْ یَّتَّقِ اللّٰہَ یَجْعَلْ لَّہُ مِنْ اَمْرِہٖ یُسْرًا﴾Translation:
Whoever fears Allah—He will make ease for him in his affairs.
③ Forgiveness of Sins and a Great Reward
﴿وَمَنْ یَّتَّقِ اللّٰہَ یُکَفِّرْ عَنْہُ سَیِّـَٔاتِہٖ وَیُعْظِمْ لَہُ اَجْرًا﴾Translation:
Whoever fears Allah—He will erase his sins and grant him a tremendous reward.
④ Ability to Distinguish Truth from Falsehood
﴿یٰٓاَیُّھَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا اِنْ تَتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ یَجْعَلْ لَّکُمْ فُرْقَانًا﴾Translation:
O you who believe! If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (furqān) to distinguish between truth and falsehood.
(The same verse also contains a promise of forgiveness.)
⑤ The Love of Allah
﴿اِنَّ اللّٰہَ یُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ﴾Translation:
Indeed, Allah loves the muttaqīn.
⑥ Allah’s Companionship and Help
﴿اِنَّ اللّٰہَ مَعَ الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا وَالَّذِیْنَ ھُمْ مُّحْسِنُوْنَ﴾Translation:
Surely Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good.
⑦ Acceptance of Deeds
﴿اِنَّمَا یَتَقَبَّلُ اللّٰہُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ﴾Translation:
Allah accepts deeds only from the muttaqīn.
⑧ Glad Tidings in This World and the Hereafter
﴿لَھُمُ الْبُشْرٰی فِی الْحَیٰوۃِ الدُّنْیَا وَفِی الْاٰخِرَۃِ﴾Translation:
For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.
⑨ Deliverance from Divine Punishment
﴿وَاَنْجَیْنَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَکَانُوْا یَتَّقُوْنَ﴾Translation:
And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.
⑩ Deserving of Allah’s Mercy
﴿فَسَاَکْتُبُھَا لِلَّذِیْنَ یَتَّقُوْنَ﴾Translation:
I will decree My mercy for those who fear Allah.
Great Rewards for the Muttaqīn in the Hereafter
Respected readers!After worldly benefits, let us see what Allah Almighty has prepared for the muttaqīn in the Hereafter. The reality is that the Hereafter, in its full sense, is for the muttaqīn.
① The Hereafter Is Only for the Muttaqīn
﴿وَالْاٰخِرَۃُ عِنْدَ رَبِّکَ لِلْمُتَّقِیْنَ﴾Translation:
And the Hereafter with your Lord is only for the muttaqīn.
② Paradise Is Reserved for the Muttaqīn
﴿تِلْکَ الدَّارُ الْاٰخِرَۃُ نَجْعَلُھَا لِلَّذِیْنَ لَا یُرِیْدُوْنَ عُلُوًّا فِی الْاَرْضِ وَلَا فَسَادًا وَالْعَاقِبَۃُ لِلْمُتَّقِیْنَ﴾Translation:
That home of the Hereafter—We assign it to those who do not seek arrogance on earth nor corruption, and the best end is for the muttaqīn.
③ Saved from Hell and Entering Paradise
﴿وَاِنْ مِّنْکُمْ اِلَّا وَارِدُھَا… ثُمَّ نُنَجِّی الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا﴾Translation:
There is none of you except that he will pass over it (Hell)—this is a decree firmly decided by your Lord. Then We will save those who feared Allah, and We will leave the wrongdoers therein.
④ Security, Gardens, Springs, and Everlasting Blessings
﴿اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ فِیْ مَقَامٍ اَمِیْنٍ فِیْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُیُوْنٍ﴾Translation:
Indeed, the muttaqīn will be in a secure station—among gardens and springs.
And He says:
﴿وَسِیْقَ الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا رَبَّھُمْ اِلَی الْجَنَّۃِ زُمَرًا﴾
Translation:
And those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups.
⑤ Two Gardens for the Muttaqīn
﴿وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّہٖ جَنَّتَانِ﴾Translation:
And for the one who feared standing before his Lord—there are two gardens.
⑥ Only the Muttaqīn Will Inherit Paradise
﴿تِلْکَ الْجَنَّۃُ الَّتِیْ نُوْرِثُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا مَنْ کَانَ تَقِیًّا﴾Translation:
That is the Paradise which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were muttaqīn.
Conclusion
This truth has become as clear as daylight: the only path to success in this world and the Hereafter is taqwā. Whoever acts upon the commands of Allah Almighty, avoids prohibitions, keeps his outward and inward state pure, and fears Allah in every circumstance—he is the true muttaqī. May Allah Almighty grant us true taqwā, enable us to adopt the qualities of the muttaqīn, and make us inheritors of Paradise.Āmīn yā Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn.
