The Reality of Brotherhood Between Hazrat Ali and the Prophet ﷺ

Authored by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (ḥafiẓahullāh)

❖ The Statement of Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was establishing bonds of brotherhood among his companions. He stated:

"Ali (رضي الله عنه) is my brother, and I am his brother. O Allah! Keep him away (from harm)."
[Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl: 7/104 | Also narrated by Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil in the biography of Hayyāj]

❖ The Narrator:

This narration is reported by Hayyāj ibn Bisṭām al-Harawī, about whom several critical remarks from hadith scholars have been recorded:

Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn stated: He is weak.
Abū Dāwūd said: The hadith scholars have abandoned his narrations.
Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal remarked: He is matrūk al-ḥadīth (abandoned in hadith).
➤ He passed away in the year 177 AH.
➤ No one has narrated from him except Ibn Mājah.
Imām al-Nasāʾī wrote: Hayyāj ibn Bisṭām al-Harawī is weak.
[al-Ḍuʿafāʾ wa al-Matrūkīn by al-Nasāʾī, p. 105]
