The Qur’an: Creation or Attribute?

Source: Fatawa Ulama-e-Hadith, Volume 09

❖ Question:

Is the Qur’an a creation of Allah or one of His attributes? If it is an attribute of Allah, is it permissible to swear an oath by it?

❖ Answer:

The Qur’an is the speech of Allah ﷻ and is considered one of His attributes. It is not a created entity, as the speech of Allah is a divine attribute of His essence, and attributes are not classified as creation. However, the physical components of the Qur’an—such as the paper, binding, and ink—are indeed created.

❖ Swearing by the Qur’an:

Since the Qur’an is the speech of Allah, and His speech is one of His attributes, it is permissible to swear an oath by the Qur’an. Just as it is lawful to swear by other attributes of Allah, likewise, swearing by the Qur’an is valid, because it represents the divine speech and attribute of Allah.

❖ Summary:

✔ The Qur’an is an attribute of Allah ﷻ, not a creation.
✔ Being a divine attribute, swearing by the Qur’an is permissible.
✔ Although the physical form of the Qur’an (paper, ink, etc.) is created, these should be respected due to their association with the divine speech.
