The home is where one’s true character is tested, as it is where a person interacts with their family day and night, in every condition. Within this private space, it is difficult to conceal one’s natural disposition.
That is why the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Nikāḥ, Ḥadīth: 5186)
Despite his immense responsibilities, the Prophet ﷺ never neglected the rights of his household. A close study of his life reveals that whether it was with his wives, children, servants, or relatives, he always acted with justice, love, and compassion.
The Prophet ﷺ was a loving and just husband. He ensured fairness and equality among his wives, even though Shariah did not obligate him to do so in certain aspects.
✔ He designated specific days for each wife and fulfilled their needs attentively.
✔ When traveling, he would perform drawing of lots to decide which wife would accompany him.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth: 2581)
After ʿAṣr prayer, the Prophet ﷺ would visit each of his wives to inquire about their well-being.
✔ Once, Ḥafṣah (رضي الله عنها) gave her turn to ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها), and the Prophet ﷺ honored that arrangement.
✔ When entering the home, he would greet with salām and participate in household chores.
(Zād al-Maʿād)
His household was filled with love, compassion, and even light-hearted moments.
✔ ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrates that she raced the Prophet ﷺ and won once, to which he joyfully said, “This one repays that race.”
✔ He was tender with children—carrying them, kissing them, greeting them on the streets, and treating them with affection.
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth: 2426)
Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه), who served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years, said:
“He never once said ‘uff’ to me, nor did he ever scold me for any mistake.”
The Prophet ﷺ was always gentle and patient.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth: 6038)
The Prophet ﷺ actively participated in home chores, such as:
✔ Milking goats
✔ Repairing his sandals
✔ Performing minor housework
ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) said:
“He would help with household tasks and treat his family with love.”
(Zād al-Maʿād)
✔ The Prophet ﷺ would eat whatever food was available, without complaint.
✔ If it was his preferred food, he ate it; if not, he remained silent.
✔ His bedding was simple—sometimes made of palm fibers, sometimes just leather.
(Zād al-Maʿād)
The Prophet’s ﷺ marital and domestic life reflected the Islamic spirit of love, justice, and respect.
He set a living example of how to maintain a balanced, peaceful household—a solution to today’s domestic discord and anxiety.
“He himself was not just guided, but a guide for others. What a vision it was that turned ordinary people into saviors.”
