The Prophetic Method of Tayammum and Rebuttal of Deviations

❖ The Prophetic Method of Tayammum and Refutation of Opposing Arguments ❖
Adapted from the original article by Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amani Puri (Hafizahullah), enhanced for clarity with headings and structure.

◈ The Authentic Prophetic Method of Tayammum

The method of Tayammum authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ through sound Ahadith is as follows:

➤ He ﷺ would strike both hands once upon the earth and then wipe his face and hands.
No other method is authentically proven from him ﷺ.

◈ Evidence #1: Hadith of ʿAmmar ibn Yāsir (RA)

ʿAmmar ibn Yāsir (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ once sent him on a mission. On the way, he experienced a state of janābah and, unable to find water, rolled on the ground like an animal. When he returned and told the Prophet ﷺ, he said:

“It would have sufficed for you to do this.”
Then the Prophet ﷺ struck the earth with both hands, wiped his left hand over his right, and then wiped both over his face.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 347, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 368)

In another narration:
The Prophet ﷺ struck the earth, blew on his hands, and wiped over his face and hands.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 338)

This is the exact method taught and practiced by ʿAmmar ibn Yāsir (RA) and conveyed to others.

◈ Opposition Based on Blind Following (Taqlīd)

Some individuals oppose this Prophetic method due to their adherence to traditionalist views and overlook authentic Hadiths. Notably, scholars such as Taqī Usmānī and Ḥusayn Aḥmad Madnī have presented interpretations diverging from the clear Hadith of ʿAmmar (RA).

◈ Practice of ʿAmmar ibn Yāsir (RA)

Abū Mālik Ghazwān (RA) reported seeing ʿAmmar (RA) in Kūfah during a sermon, where he struck the earth and wiped over his face and hands.
(Sunan al-Dāraquṭnī: 702)

◈ Refutation of the Contrary Narration from Musnad al-Bazzār

Opponents cite a narration stating ʿAmmar (RA) struck once for the face and once for the arms up to the elbows. However, this narration is weak due to tadlīs and unreliable chains.

◈ Responding to Objections by Madnī Sahib

Verbal Instruction & Practical Demonstration by the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ both verbally taught and practically demonstrated Tayammum as one strike for the face and hands. Objections citing a different method stem from weak narrations involving Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah and Qatādah ibn Diʿāmah, both mudallis with no clear link of hearing (samāʿ).
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 327, Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 144)

Strong Narration in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
A clear narration:
The Prophet ﷺ struck his palms on the earth, blew on them, and wiped his face and hands.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 343)

Unreliable Reports About Elbow Wiping
Some narrations claim wiping up to the elbows. These are all afflicted with shakk (doubt) or munkar (rejected) chains.

◈ Supporting Evidence #2: Incident of Abū Jahīm al-Anṣārī (RA)

Abū Jahīm (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ once passed by Bīr Jamal. A man greeted him, but he delayed replying until he reached a wall, performed Tayammum, and then responded.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 337, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 369)

Similarly, Ibn ʿUmar (RA) narrated that after relieving himself, the Prophet ﷺ wiped over his face and hands before replying to a greeting.
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 331, Sunan al-Dāraquṭnī: 666)

These authentic narrations reinforce the face and hands only method.

◈ Analysis of Weak and Fabricated Narrations Cited by Opponents

A thorough critique of 12 narrations frequently cited in support of striking twice or wiping to the elbows, reveals that:

All chains are weak or fabricated.
Most involve unreliable, unknown, or rejected narrators.
Contradictions to the ṣaḥīḥ reports are apparent.

Each narration is dissected with references to scholars like Imām al-Bukhārī, Ibn Ḥibbān, Ibn ʿAdī, al-Bayhaqī, and Ibn Ḥajar. For brevity, these include narrations from Sunan Abī Dāwūd, al-Dāraquṭnī, Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn, and others.

◈ Conclusion

All narrations supporting two strikes or elbow wiping are weak, fabricated, or unreliable.
The authentic Sunnah of Tayammum is a single strike followed by wiping the face and hands (palms) only.

It is impermissible to alter the Prophetic practice based on unauthenticated traditions.

❀ Supplication

May Allah grant us the ability to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ faithfully. Āmīn!
