The Prophetic Command Regarding the Treatment for Hasad (Envy)

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (ḥafiẓahullāh)

❖ Question:

Is there any evidence for the treatment of hasad (envy) in Islam?

❖ Answer:

Yes, indeed.

❖ Prophetic Evidence:

From Umm al-Mu’minin A’ishah (رضي الله عنها), it is narrated:

«أمرني النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أو أمر أن نسترقي من العين»

“The Prophet ﷺ commanded me—or he commanded (us)—to seek Ruqyah (spiritual healing) from the evil eye.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Tibb, Bab Ruqyah al-‘Ayn, Hadith 5738;
Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2195)

❖ Explanation:

✿ This Hadith explicitly proves the legitimacy of seeking treatment for the evil eye, which includes envy (hasad).
✿ The Prophet ﷺ either directly instructed or approved of using Ruqyah (spiritual remedy through Qur’anic verses and supplications) for protection and cure from the effects of the evil eye.

❖ Ruqyah as a Remedy:

  • Ruqyah involves reciting specific Duas and Qur’anic verses, such as Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas, to seek refuge from the harm of the envier when he envies.
Surah Al-Falaq (113:5):

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

“And from the evil of the envier when he envies.”

✿ This is a divine endorsement to seek protection from the harm of envy, showing that hasad is real and can cause harm, but also that it has a spiritual cure.

❖ Conclusion:

✔ The Prophet ﷺ has clearly commanded Ruqyah as a treatment for envy and the evil eye.
✔ This establishes a clear and authentic Sunnah basis for treating hasad.
✔ Muslims should adopt this divinely prescribed remedy with firm faith and consistent practice.
