✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
كان رسول الله إذا خطب احمرت عيناه وعلا صوته واشتد غضبه حتى كأنه منذر جيش يقول: صبحكم ومساكم
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would deliver the khutbah, his eyes would redden, his voice would rise, and his anger would intensify, as if he were warning an army saying:
‘The enemy will attack you in the morning or in the evening!’”
[Muslim: 867; Kitāb al-Jumuʿah: Bāb on Lightening the Prayer and the Khutbah | Ibn Majah: 45]
This illustrates the deep seriousness and urgency with which the Prophet ﷺ delivered his sermons — full of passion, conviction, and warning.
During his khutbah, the Prophet ﷺ would point with his index finger.
[Sahih: Sahih Abu Dawud: 977 | Abu Dawud: 1104 | Ahmad: 4/135 | Tirmidhi: 515 | Nasa’i: 3/108 | Ibn Khuzaymah: 1794]
✔ Imam al-Shawkānī states:
➤ The apparent meaning of these narrations is that it is permissible to gesture with the finger during the Friday khutbah.
[Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/563]
◈ Emotionally charged delivery with a raised voice and visible seriousness
◈ Red eyes and intense tone, reflective of his concern for the Ummah
◈ Used hand gestures, especially pointing with the index finger to emphasize
◈ His khutbah was not mere formality, but powerful admonition and sincere warning
