The Prohibition of Harboring Hatred Against Scholars of Truth

The Ruling on Harboring Hatred Against the Scholars of Truth

Source: Fatawa Ameenpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri

Question

What is the ruling on holding hatred against the scholars of truth (ʿUlamāʾ al-Ḥaqq)?

Answer

Harboring hatred against the scholars of truth is haram. Whoever nurtures enmity against them cannot remain steadfast upon the truth. Before death, his heart dies, his deeds are wasted, and he becomes an easy prey for Shayṭān.

❀ It is stated:

من أبغض عالما من غير سبب ظاهر خيف عليه الكفر
“Whoever harbors hatred against a scholar without any apparent reason, there is fear of kufr upon him.”
(Fatawa ʿAlamgiri 2/270; Majmaʿ al-Anhar li-Shaykhi Zadah 1/695; Lisan al-Ḥukkām by Ibn al-Shinnah al-Ḥalabi al-Hanafi, p. 415; al-Baḥr al-Rāʾiq by Ibn Nujaym 5/134)
