The Prohibition of Gold for Men in Islam — Evidences and Explanation

Source: Shumara Al-Sunnah, Jhelum

✦ Commitment to Shari'ah: A Duty of Every Muslim

It is incumbent upon a Muslim to adhere strictly to the Shari'ah of Islam. One must observe its boundaries, prohibitions, and commands, surrendering fully to its rulings. It must be deeply understood that anything Islam has prohibited is for our own benefit, and whatever it has commanded is for our gain. Allah, the Most Merciful Master, is wise in His commands, and true submission to Him is what defines Islam.

✦ Gold is Forbidden for Men — Authentic Evidences

Narration of Abdullah ibn Abbas
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a gold ring in a man's hand, removed it, and said:
"يعمد أحدكم إلى جمرة من نار فيجعلها فى يده..."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2090]

❖ This narration makes it evident that the Prophet ﷺ equated the wearing of a gold ring by a man with holding a burning coal. The companion refused to retrieve or use it again, even when suggested.

Narration of Abu Umamah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فلا يلبس حريرا ولا ذهبا"
[Musnad Aḥmad: 5/261 – Authentic Chain]

❖ One who believes in Allah and the Last Day must not wear silk or gold.

Narration of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri
A man came from Najran wearing a gold ring. The Prophet ﷺ turned away from him and said:

"إنك جئتني وفي يدك جمرة من نار"
[Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 5188; Musnad Aḥmad: 3/14 – Authentic Chain]

Narration of Abdullah ibn Umar
The Prophet ﷺ once wore a gold ring, but later discarded it saying he would never wear it again. The companions followed suit.
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5867]

Narration of Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib
The Prophet ﷺ forbade us from seven things, one of which was wearing a gold ring.
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5863]

✦ Addressing Possible Objections

What about Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib رضي الله عنه wearing a gold ring?
He considered the wearing of that ring specific to himself based on a direct instruction from the Prophet ﷺ who personally gifted it to him:

"خذ البس ما كساك الله ورسوله"
[Musnad Aḥmad: 4/294 – Authentic Chain]

He said: "How can I remove a ring that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself put on me?"

What about other companions wearing gold rings?
It is possible that the prohibition had not yet reached them at the time they wore it.

Narration of Abu Hurayrah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"من أحب أن يحلق حبيبه حلقة من نار... ولكن عليكم بالفضة فالعبوا بها"
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 4236 – Authentic Chain]

❖ Whoever adorns his beloved with gold is, in effect, adorning him with a ring, bracelet, or chain of fire. But silver is permissible for men — use it freely.

Narration of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib
The Prophet ﷺ held silk in one hand and gold in the other and said:

"إن هذين حرام على ذكور أمتي"
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 4057; Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 5144 – Authentic Chain]

Narration of ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"الحرير والذهب حرام على ذكور أمتي، وحلال لإنائهم"
[Maʿrifah wa al-Tārīkh: 2/506 – Authentic Chain]

✦ Exceptions in Necessity

❖ In certain emergency or medical cases, gold may be used by men, such as:
  • Gold nose prosthesis
  • Gold filling in teeth
  • Gold wiring for dental correction
Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Arfajah narrated:
"عرفجة بن أسعد قطع أنفه... فأمره النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم، فاتخذ أنفا من ذهب"
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 4232; Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1770 – Authentic Chain]

His grandfather's nose was severed in battle, and after a silver replacement became foul-smelling, the Prophet ﷺ permitted a gold prosthetic.

Note: Using gold caps or coverings for teeth as mere decoration is strictly impermissible.
