The Prohibition of Cigarette Smoking and the Shari'ah Ruling on Testimony

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman A‘zami (رحمه الله)

❖ Testimony of a Cigarette Smoker

Without doubt, cigarette smoking is haram. There are numerous evidences from the Qur'an and Sunnah that point to its prohibition. Additionally, its harmful effects on health, wealth, and society also serve as a compelling rationale for its impermissibility.

A person who is addicted to smoking, or one who sells or manufactures cigarettes, is considered a disobedient individual in the sight of Allah and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم).

However, as for the acceptability of such a person’s testimony, this ruling varies depending on:

✔ The circumstances of the smoker himself,
✔ The case at hand,
✔ The person against whom he is testifying, and
✔ The one in whose favor he is testifying.

The final judgment rests with the judge or authority overseeing the specific case in which the smoker presents his testimony.
