Source: Fatāwā Āmanpūrī – Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Āmanpūrī

❖ Question

What is the prescribed amount of Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr according to the aḥādīth?

✿ Answer

Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr is to be given from the staple food commonly consumed in one’s region, such as wheat, barley, dates, raisins, cheese, etc.

  • Its prescribed amount is one ṣāʿ (equivalent to 2 sēr 4 chhattānk ≈ 2.099 kg ≈ 2 kilograms) of the food item, or its equivalent monetary value may be given.

Evidence from Ḥadīth

From ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1503; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 984)

Translation:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakāt al-Fiṭr obligatory as one ṣāʿ of dates or one ṣāʿ of barley, upon every Muslim — slave or free, male or female, young or old.”

✅ Conclusion

  • The amount of Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr is 1 ṣāʿ of staple food (~ 2.099 kg).
  • It may be discharged either in food itself or its monetary equivalent, according to need and benefit.
