The Peak of Disbelief and Its Connection to Satan in Light of Hadith

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Is the rise of disbelief connected to Satan?

❖ Answer:

It is narrated from Sayyidunā Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that he said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out from the house of Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and then he ﷺ said:

**
رَأْسُ الْكُفْرِ مِنْ هَاهُنَا، مِنْ حَيْثُ يَطْلُعُ قَرْنُ الشَّيْطَانِ
**
"The head of disbelief is from here – from where the horn of Satan emerges."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth No. 5170]

It is understood from this that the Prophet ﷺ was referring to the East.

In another narration, it is mentioned:

**
الْفِتْنَةُ هَاهُنَا، حَيْثُ يَطْلُعُ قَرْنُ الشَّيْطَانِ
**
"The trial (fitnah) will arise from there, from where the horn of Satan emerges."

✿ Explanation:

These narrations clarify that the origin or peak of disbelief and tribulations is linked to the rise of Satan’s influence, which is metaphorically indicated as the direction from which his horn emerges—that is, the East.

✔ Summary:
Yes, the elevation and spread of disbelief are associated with Satan. The Hadith explicitly points toward the East as the direction from which the major trials and the leadership of disbelief will arise, signifying Satan's role in its propagation.
