The Path of Light... Knowledge

The greatest wealth for a person is faith. There is a tremendous connection between faith and knowledge. This is why Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) placed the Book of Knowledge after the Book of Faith in his collection. The treasure of knowledge lies in the Quran and Hadith. Everything compared to the Quran and Hadith is considered ignorance. Ignorance is also referred to as imitation.

◈ Allama Ibn Abdul Barr and others have narrated the consensus of Muslims on this: "Imitation is another name for ignorance, and the imitator is ignorant."[Jami' Bayan al-Ilm wa Fadlih 1/117, I'lam al-Muwaqqi'in 1/45, also 2/188]

From imitation and ignorance spread the deepest darkness, whereas rays of light emerge from knowledge and research, leading to insight. Consider that the first revelation neither discussed polytheism and disbelief, nor halal and haram, nor other commandments and duties. The first revelation began with "Iqra" (Read), which encourages knowledge. In Surah Muhammad, verse 19, knowledge is also placed before monotheism. Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) has titled a chapter: The Chapter of Knowledge Before Speech and Action[Ba'ad Hadith: 67], and the aforementioned verse serves as his evidence. Because it is through knowledge that one gains recognition of Allah. Allah says:

"Only those among His servants who have knowledge fear Allah."

[35-Fatir:28]

The ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood, differentiate between polytheism and monotheism, identify tradition and innovation, and discern between halal and haram, religion and irreligion, can only be achieved through knowledge. Allah bestowed superiority upon Adam (peace be upon him) over the angels because of knowledge. Imagine how great a scholar the Prophet of the universe must have been, who had the knowledge of revelation. Yet, despite this, Allah, the Lord of all worlds, taught him this prayer:

"O my Lord, increase me in knowledge."

[Ta-Ha: 114]

◈ Allama Ibn Abdul Barr has narrated the consensus of the scholars that: "It is obligatory to acquire knowledge of the principles of Shariah."

[Jami' Bayan al-Ilm wa Fadlih 1/10]

◈ Hafiz Ibn Hajar writes under the verse [Al-Mujadila: 11] that:

"And by knowledge is meant the knowledge of Shariah."

[Fath al-Bari 1/141]

Muhammad Al-Arabi (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

"Whomever Allah intends good for, He gives him understanding of the religion."

[Bukhari: 71]

↰ Knowledge is the most serious power, rather the spirit of all powers. Guns and cannons are subject to knowledge. May Allah fill our hearts with the love of true scholars and fill our chests with beneficial knowledge. O Allah! Grant us the ability to act with righteous deeds along with beneficial knowledge!
