قال رسول الله ﷺ: ليس منا من لم يرحم صغيرنا ولم يعرف شرف كبيرنا.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Tirmidhī, Abwāb al-Birr wa al-Ṣilah, Bāb Mā Jāʾa fī Raḥmat al-Ṣibyān: 1920
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“He is not from us who does not show mercy to our young and does not recognize the honour of our elders.”
This ḥadīth is a severe warning and a rebuke to those who:
Do not show affection, gentleness, or compassion to children.
Fail to respect the elderly and acknowledge their dignity.
Such behavior is contrary to the character of a true Muslim, and the Prophet ﷺ disassociated himself from those who display such conduct.
① Mercy toward the young is a hallmark of Prophetic character.
② One who lacks compassion for children is not upon the way of the Prophet ﷺ.
③ Respect for elders and kindness to the young are both obligations in Islamic social conduct.
④ This ḥadīth emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence in building an upright Muslim society.
