Written by: Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai (may Allah have mercy on him)

Question:

In one narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

كلامي لا ينسخ كلام الله، وكلام الله ينسخ كلامي، وكلام الله ينسخ بعضه بعضا

"My words do not abrogate the words of Allah, the words of Allah abrogate my words, and the words of Allah abrogate each other."

[Mishkat al-Masabih: 195]

Is this narration authentic? Please investigate and provide an answer. Jazakum Allahu Khairan (A questioner).

Answer:

This narration is mentioned in Mishkat al-Masabih with the reference (Sunan) of Darqutni (145/4 Hadith 4233).

It is narrated by Darqutni, Ibn Adi [al-Kamil 602/2 second version 443/2], and Ibn al-Jawzi [al-‘Ilal al-Mutanahiyah 125/1 Hadith 190] from Jabrun bin Waqid: narrated by Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah from Abu al-Zubair from Jabir.

Ibn Adi said: "This Hadith is Munkar (denounced)." [See also Dakhirat al-Huffaz: 4406]

Hafiz Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said about this Hadith: "Fabricated" [Mizan al-I'tidal 388/1]

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) maintained this decision in Lisan al-Mizan. [See Lisan 94/2]

Regarding Jabrun bin Waqid, Dhahabi said: "He is not trustworthy." [Diwan al-Du'afa wa al-Matrukin: 722, al-Mughni fi al-Du'afa: 1089]

And he also said: "He is accused because he narrates without shame…" [Mizan al-I'tidal 387, 388/1]

The term "accused" here means accused of fabricating Hadith. [al-Kashf al-Hathith 'an man Rumi bi-Wad' al-Hadith p. 122]

No scholar has authenticated this narrator.

Summary of the Investigation:

This narration is fabricated due to Jabrun bin Waqid.
