The Meaning and Status of “Qāla Lī” (قال لي)

◈ Question:​


Is the phrase qāla lī (قال لي — “he said to me”) considered an explicit statement of hearing (ṣarīḥ al-samāʿ)?


◈ Answer:​


Yes, this is a formula of explicit hearing. If even a mudallis narrator says qāla lī, it will be regarded as a clear indication of samāʿ.


❀ Statement of the Scholars​


Hafiz Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله:
“If a narrator says qāla lī (he said to me), it is carried upon direct hearing.”

✅ Conclusion:
The phrase qāla lī is considered a clear proof of samāʿ (direct hearing), even when used by a narrator known for tadlīs.
