Is it true that the majority of those who enter Hell will be women? If so, what is the reason for this?
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
Yes, it is true. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly stated that women will constitute the majority of Hell’s inhabitants. He ﷺ addressed women, saying:
«يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ! تَصَدَّقْنَ فَاِنِّیْ رأيتکنَّ اَکْثَرَ اَهْلِ النَّارِ»
“O women! Give in charity, for I have seen that you are the majority of the people of Hell.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 304; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 79)
When the women expressed surprise and asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! Why is that so?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
«تُکْثِرْنَ اللَّعْنَ وَتَکْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ»
“You frequently curse and you are ungrateful to your husbands.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 304; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 79)
From the Prophet’s ﷺ explanation, the main causes are:
❀ Frequent cursing and foul speech.
❀ Disobedience or ingratitude toward husbands.
These moral shortcomings and behavioral failings will lead many women to be among the people of Hell.
وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَابِ
