Adapted from: Ṣalāh al-Muslim by Al-Fatḥ Ḥusayn

❖ Wiping Over Socks (Jawrab)

Wiping over both leather and fabric socks is permissible according to authentic traditions.

✿ Hadith from Shurayḥ ibn Hāni’

"I asked ʿAlī رضي الله عنه about the duration for wiping over the leather socks. He replied:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set the duration for the traveler at three days and three nights, and for the resident at one day and one night."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: Kitāb al-Ṭahārah: 276)

✿ Hadith from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah

"I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. When he began his ablution, I moved to remove his socks. He ﷺ said:
Leave them, for I put them on while I was in a state of purity, and he wiped over them."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: Kitāb al-Wuḍū’: 206)

✿ Consensus of the Companions

Ibn Qudāmah states:
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ were unanimously agreed on the permissibility of wiping over socks.
(Al-Mughnī by Ibn Qudāmah: 332)

✿ Examples of the Companions Practicing It

Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd, and ʿAmr ibn Umayyah رضي الله عنهم used to wipe over socks.
(Ibn Abī Shaybah: 173)

❖ Wiping Over the Turban (ʿImāmah)

✿ Hadith from ʿAmr ibn Umayyah

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped over his turban."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: Kitāb al-Wuḍū’: 205)

These narrations establish the clear permissibility of wiping over both socks and the turban in ablution, a practice upheld by the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions.
