Is it permissible to perform Masah (wiping) over socks?
Yes, it is indeed permissible to wipe over socks, and this permissibility is supported by clear evidence found in the Hadith. It is narrated from Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) performed ablution and wiped over his socks (jurabayn) and shoes (na’layn).
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Taharah, Chapter: On Wiping Over the Socks and Sandals)
Imam Tirmidhi has graded this Hadith as Hasan Sahih, indicating that the act of wiping over socks is clearly established by the practice of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم).
Performing Masah over socks is established from the Sunnah and is permissible, provided that the socks meet the conditions prescribed for wiping—such as being similar to leather socks (khuffain), covering the foot completely, and being thick enough to prevent water from seeping through.
