Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله)
Question:
I have already performed Witr in the early part of the night, and later in the night I was blessed with the opportunity to perform Qiyām al-Layl. How should I now offer the prayer?
Answer:
If you have already performed Witr in the early part of the night and then, by the grace of Allah, you are able to stand for prayer later in the night, you should perform two rakʿahs at a time (in sets of two) without repeating the Witr.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are no two Witrs in one night.”
It is established from Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) that the Prophet ﷺ used to offer two rakʿahs while sitting after the Witr. The wisdom behind this was to show the permissibility of performing prayers after Witr.
And Allah knows best.
