❀ 1. The Significance of the Marital Relationship in Islam​


Islam regards the relationship between husband and wife as a source of love, tranquility, and happiness. Through the institution of Nikah, Allah ﷻ has made spouses a means of peace and comfort for one another. Compassion and good treatment between them have been made obligatory. By adopting these principles in light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, a husband can keep his wife happy and content.


❀ 2. The Husband-Wife Relationship in the Light of the Qur’an​


① Purpose of Marriage: Tranquility and Love​


وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ... (Surah Ar-Rum: 21)


Translation: “And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.”


Explanation: Allah ﷻ has made the marital relationship a source of peace and love. It is a husband’s duty to provide affection and be a source of tranquility for his wife.


② Living with Kindness​


وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ (Surah An-Nisa: 19)


Translation: “And live with them in kindness.”


Explanation: A husband must treat his wife with gentleness and kindness so that she remains happy and satisfied.


Importance of Love and Mercy


هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّ (Surah Al-Baqarah: 187)


Translation: “They (your wives) are a garment for you and you are a garment for them.”


Explanation: Just as clothes protect and comfort a person, similarly, the marital bond should be a source of mutual love and tranquility.


❀ 3. The Husband-Wife Relationship in the Light of Hadith​


① Best in Conduct to Family​


خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ... (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3895)


Translation: “The best among you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family.”


Explanation: A husband should treat his wife with affection, gentleness, and the best of manners so that she remains content and fulfilled.


② Giving Gifts to One’s Wife​


تَهَادَوْا تَحَابُّوا (Muwatta Imam Malik, Hadith: 1775)


Translation: “Exchange gifts, and love will develop among you.”


Explanation: Gifts strengthen love and relationships. A husband can bring joy to his wife by presenting her with gifts.


Fulfilling the Wife’s Needs


أَلا وَاسْتَوْصُوا بِالنِّسَاءِ خَيْرًا (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 5186)


Translation: “Take good care of women.”


Explanation: The Prophet ﷺ emphasized fulfilling the rights of one’s wife and treating her well.


4. Practical Examples


✔ The Prophet ﷺ and His Wives​


The Prophet ﷺ displayed love and kindness toward his noble wives. On one occasion, he raced with ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها just to bring her joy.
(Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith: 2578)


✔ ʿAlī and Fāṭimah رضي الله عنهما​


There was deep love and cooperation between ʿAlī and Fāṭimah رضي الله عنهما. ʿAlī رضي الله عنه would assist Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها with household chores.

❀ 5. Practical Ways for a Husband to Keep His Wife Happy​


Show love and gentleness: Interact with kindness and value her words.
Give gifts: A means of strengthening affection.
Spend time together: Helps build a strong emotional bond.
Offer praise: Complimenting her fosters a pleasant atmosphere.
Act on Islamic teachings: Following the Sunnah in showing love and compassion is part of faith.


❀ 6. Summary​


Islam instructs the husband to treat his wife with love, respect, and gentleness. In light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, it is his duty to keep her happy, fulfill her needs, and devote time and attention to her. This creates an environment of love and tranquility in the home.
