The Incident of Quraysh's Proposal and Its Reality

Authored by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid حفظه الله

Quraysh's Proposal: Take ‘Umārah, Give Us Muhammad ﷺ

When the Quraysh fully realized that Abu Talib would neither stop supporting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nor hand him over to them—and that he was prepared to sever all ties and even engage in enmity for this matter—they came to him with ‘Umārah bin Walid bin Mughīrah.

They said:

“O Abu Talib, this is ‘Umārah bin al-Walīd—Quraysh’s most robust, handsome, and distinguished young man. Take him and benefit from his intellect and strength; consider him your own son. We give him to you.
In return, give us your nephew who has insulted your religion and the religion of your forefathers, scattered our united community, and labeled our elders as fools. Hand him over so that we may kill him. One man for another!”

Abu Talib responded:

“By Allah! This is a terrible deal you offer me. You want me to take your son so I can raise him, and in return hand over my son for you to kill him? Never shall this happen!”

Mut’im bin ‘Adiyy bin Nawfal bin ‘Abd Manāf then said:

“O Abu Talib, your people have dealt justly with you. They have tried to lift you out of a burden you yourself deem unpleasant. But it seems you do not wish to accept any of their terms.”

Abu Talib replied:

“They have done no justice to me! Rather, you have all decided to abandon me and brought everyone together against me. Now do whatever you wish.”
