The Importance of Denial in Refining the Concept of God

✿ Philosophical Discourse on the Existence of God

Engaging in philosophical discussions about the existence of God is essential, as it continuously purifies the human perception of the Divine. Human beings can never live without worshiping some form of ‘god’. Even material entities — such as status, wealth, or offspring — can assume the role of a deity, especially for those inclined toward atheism. Genuine atheism is practically impossible, as humans invariably submit to some form of power or force.

❀ The Sufi Perspective

According to the Sufis, one who denies the existence of God and detaches from worldly desires is not considered an atheist; rather, such a person is seen as having attained the station of fana (annihilation of the self in the Divine).

❀ Philosophy as a Tool to Refine Divine Perception

Philosophy serves as a means to cleanse and purify the concept of God. To confront societal evils, the idea of God must continually undergo purification. Atheists play a crucial role in this process by questioning the negative interpretations of the Divine, thereby compelling believers to strengthen and refine their understanding of faith.

❀ The Necessity of Denial

Denial of God becomes necessary in every era. Without such denial, societies become overwhelmed by idols — symbolic or actual. Faiz Ahmad Faiz eloquently captures this in his verse:

"Now, to replace centuries of compliance and submission,
It is essential that a decree of denial descend."

To dismantle societal stagnation, the presence of atheism is needed — ensuring that the concept of God remains in its purest form.

❀ Ijtihad and Social Reform

When the door to ijtihad (independent reasoning) closes within a society, the door to falsehood and innovation opens. Harmful customs flourish, draining the vitality of the social fabric and necessitating reform.

❀ The Role of Reformers

As societal corruption spreads, reformers become essential. A true reformer is one who carries the banner of denial — challenging injustices and outdated traditions. A successful reformer wins the hearts of the youth and inspires them to follow a path of change.

❀ Revolt Against Societal Vices

For genuine societal transformation, the youth must possess a spirit of denial equal in strength to the insistence of the older generations. The older a civilization, the greater the force of denial needed to initiate change.

❀ The Role of Atheists

Atheists contribute to the continual refinement of the concept of God. In dynamic societies, they challenge flawed ideas of God, compelling people to revise and purify their beliefs.

✿ Conclusion

To preserve the sanctity of the concept of God, denial plays a vital role. Every society requires individuals who challenge harmful traditions and outdated practices, so that social evolution and the refinement of faith may continue uninterrupted.
