The Importance and Virtues of Straightening Rows in Prayer – Complete Guidance from Qur’ān and Ḥadīth

Written by: Burhān al-Ḥaqq Rāja

Introduction

Ṣalāh (prayer) is the most important and fundamental act of worship in Islam, prescribed as the very first obligation after faith. Allah ﷻ commanded His servants to establish prayer in congregation so that the Muslim Ummah may practically embody discipline, unity, and equality.

One of the essential conditions of congregational prayer is that the rows must be straight, complete, and orderly. Aligning the rows, filling the gaps, standing shoulder to shoulder, and joining the rows firmly have all been emphasized in the Prophetic traditions.

Evidence from the Qur’ān

Though the Qur’ān does not mention the act of straightening rows during prayer directly, one verse indicates its virtue:

﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ صَفًّا كَأَنَّهُمْ بُنْيَانٌ مَرْصُوصٌ﴾ [al-Ṣaff: 4]

Translation:

“Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in ranks as though they are a solid structure.”

Explanation:
In this verse, ṣaff (row) is linked with Allah’s love, showing His approval of discipline, order, and unity. If rows are so important in battle, then surely they hold even greater importance in the sacred act of prayer.

Importance of Row Formation in Ḥadīth

Straightening Rows is Part of Completing Prayer
«سَوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ، فَإِنَّ تَسْوِيَةَ الصُّفُوفِ مِنْ تَمَامِ الصَّلَاةِ»
(Saḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 723)

Translation:
“Straighten your rows, for indeed straightening the rows is part of completing the prayer.”

This ḥadīth makes it clear that aligning rows is an integral part of the perfection of prayer.

Gaps in Rows Allow Shayṭān to Enter
(Saḥīḥ Muslim: 436)

Translation:
“Establish the rows, keep shoulders aligned, fill in the gaps, be gentle with your brothers’ hands, and do not leave spaces for Shayṭān. Whoever connects a row, Allah will connect him; and whoever breaks a row, Allah will cut him off.”

This ḥadīth warns that leaving gaps gives Shayṭān a chance to sow division among Muslims, while joining the rows brings closeness to Allah.

Severe Warning for Neglecting Row Formation
«لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللَّهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ»
(Saḥīḥ al-Bukhārī & Saḥīḥ Muslim)

Translation:
“Straighten your rows, or Allah will create division between your faces (hearts).”

This hadith shows the danger of neglect — disunity and discord are the result of careless rows.

Benefits of Straightening Rows

Increases Khushūʿ and Khudūʿ (focus and humility): Organized rows strengthen the spiritual impact of prayer.
Manifestation of Muslim unity: All stand shoulder to shoulder without distinction, expressing equality.
Blocks Shayṭān: Filling gaps prevents Shayṭān from interfering.
Attaining Allah’s love: As highlighted in Qur’ān and Ḥadīth.
Eliminates arrogance: Everyone stands as equals, regardless of status.

Conclusion

Correct formation of rows in prayer is a highly important aspect of both the outward and inward etiquettes of ṣalāh. The Prophet ﷺ repeatedly emphasized aligning the rows, closing the gaps, and joining together in prayer. Neglecting this practice leads to spiritual harm and disunity.

Thus, every Muslim must not only ensure participation in congregational prayer but also take responsibility for keeping the rows straight and complete — thereby fulfilling a Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ and attaining Allah’s pleasure.
