The Importance and Effect of the Remembrance of Allah

Authored by: Fadhilat al-Shaykh Hafiz Abdul Sattar Hammad (may Allah preserve him)

✦ Constant Remembrance of Allah ✦

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ أَحْيَانِهِ
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 373]

"The Prophet ﷺ used to remember Allah at all times."

✦ Benefits ✦

❖ Every Muslim, male or female, should remain constantly engaged in the remembrance of Allah under all circumstances.
❖ The Prophet ﷺ was in a constant state of dhikr, which brought tranquility to his heart.

Allah says:
"Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."
[al-Raʿd: 28]

✦ Description of the Believers ✦

Allah describes His believing servants as:
"They remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides."
[Āl ʿImrān: 191]

✦ Importance for the Callers to Islam (Duʿāt) ✦

Those who call others to Islam should especially ensure they engage in abundant remembrance of Allah, never becoming negligent.

When Allah sent Mūsā and Hārūn (عليهما السلام) to Pharaoh, He specifically advised:
"Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not slacken in My remembrance."
[Ṭā Hā: 42]

✦ Dhikr is Greater Than All ✦

The Qur'an explicitly states:
"And the remembrance of Allah is greater."
[al-ʿAnkabūt: 45]

✦ Greater Than Even Prayer in Preventing Evil ✦

Dhikr is more effective than even ṣalāh in restraining immorality and wrongdoing. A person is protected from evil while praying, but its effect may diminish afterward. However, constant remembrance of Allah provides ongoing protection for a true believer from all forms of wrongdoing.
