The Great Reward of Two Rakʿahs of Ishrāq After Sunrise

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil, Discussion on Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 215

❖ Question:

Is it virtuous to perform two rakʿahs of prayer after sunrise?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!

Yes, this act is indeed full of reward.

✦ Importance of Duḥā (Ishrāq) Prayer

Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported:

(Bukhārī, Bāb Ṣalāt al-Ḍuḥā fī al-Ḥaḍar)

"My beloved friend (the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to never abandon three things until I die: fasting three days every lunar month, performing the Duḥā (Ishrāq) prayer, and sleeping after performing Witr."

✦ Reward of Two Rakʿahs After Sunrise

Anas (رضي الله عنه) reported:

(Tirmidhī)

"Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allāh until the sun rises, then prays two rakʿahs, he will have the reward of Hajj and ʿUmrah."

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Complete, complete, complete.”

✦ Authenticity of the Ḥadīth

  • Imām al-Tirmidhī classified it as ḥasan gharīb.
  • Its chain has some weakness, but due to supporting narrations mentioned by al-Mundhirī in al-Targhīb, the ḥadīth rises to the level of ḥasan.
  • Al-Albānī graded it ḥasan in his verification of Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ.

✅ Conclusion

  • Performing two rakʿahs after sunrise (Ishrāq prayer) is indeed a virtuous and rewarded act.
  • The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it, and its reward has been described as equivalent to that of a complete Hajj and ʿUmrah.
