❀ A Moving Incident of Caliph Harun al-Rashid
Imam Ya‘qub ibn Sufyan al-Farisi (رحمہ اللہ) (d. 277 AH) said:
I heard ‘Ali ibn al-Madini (رحمہ اللہ) say:
Muhammad ibn Khazim (Abu Mu‘awiyah al-Darir) stated:
I was reciting the Hadiths of Sulayman ibn Mihran al-A‘mash, which he narrated from Abu Salih (who narrated from Abu Hurairah, from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the presence of Amir al-Mu’minin Harun (al-Rashid). Whenever I said:
"The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:"
Amir al-Mu’minin would respond:
"صلى الله على سيدي و مولاي"
Until I narrated the Hadith about the meeting of Adam and Musa (علیہما السلام), in which the issue of predestination (Qadr) is established. At that point, an uncle of Harun al-Rashid said:
“O Muhammad (ibn Khazim), where did this meeting between Adam and Musa (علیہما السلام) take place?”
Hearing this, Harun al-Rashid became intensely angry and said:
“Who told you to ask this?!” and ordered for him to be arrested. Later, this uncle summoned me in prison and said, “By Allah, no one told me to say this; the words just slipped out of my mouth.” I went back and informed Amir al-Mu’minin (Harun al-Rashid) that it was merely a slip of the tongue and that no one had told him to say it. So he ordered his release and said:
“I had thought that some heretical atheists (mulhid and zindiq) had taught him this statement. If I were to find out who these atheists are, I would have them killed. However, I am confident that my Qurayshi relative could not possibly be a zindiq.”
(Kitab al-Ma‘rifah wa al-Tarikh: 2/181-182, with a sound chain; and Tarikh Baghdad: 5/243, no. 2735)
This shows that in the view of Amir al-Mu’minin Harun al-Rashid (رحمہ اللہ), anyone who attacks the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is considered an atheist and a heretic. Today, some who outwardly profess the faith make a mockery of the Book and the Sunnah, forgetting that a day is coming when every person will be presented before their Lord. What answer will those who rejected the Hadith of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) give to Allah?
The Qur’an commands:
“Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger. But if they turn away, then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers.”
(Aal-e-Imran: 32)
