Chapter: The Recommendation to Accompany the Righteous and Avoid Evil Companions

The Importance of Choosing Good Company

It is essential to spend time in the company of pious individuals and avoid associating with bad companions. The influence of one’s companions significantly impacts one’s character and actions.

Example from Hadith

Narration by Abu Musa (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of a musk seller and a blacksmith. The musk seller may either gift you some perfume, you may buy some from him, or at the very least, you will enjoy a pleasant fragrance from him. On the other hand, the blacksmith may either burn your clothes or at least you will experience an unpleasant smell from him."
[Agreed upon: Sahih Bukhari (5534), Sahih Muslim (2628)]

Advice on Friendship

Narration by Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let each one of you carefully consider whom he takes as a friend."
[Hasan: Abu Dawood (4833), Tirmidhi (2378), Ahmad (8028), Al-Hakim (171/4)]
