Hazrat Jabir (رضي الله عنه) narrates:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“O Ali (رضي الله عنه)! If my Ummah harbors hatred against you, Allah will throw them all into Hell by their noses.”
[Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl: Vol. 5, p. 54 | Also recorded by Ibn al-Jawzī in al-ʿIlal: Vol. 1, p. 242 | Ibn ʿIrāq in Tanzīh al-Sharīʿah: Vol. 1, p. 400]
This narration has been transmitted by ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Qurashī al-Shāmī from Ibn Luhayʿah.
There is significant confusion and contradiction regarding this ʿUthmān’s genealogy:
✔ Some narrate his lineage as:
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān
✔ Al-Khaṭīb reports that al-Ḥākim stated his lineage as:
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Umawī
✔ Others even trace him back to Hazrat ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (رضي الله عنه), giving a long lineage:
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUtbah ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān
✔ Imām al-Dhahabī says:
“This lineage is excessively long and pure fabrication. Between ʿAbdullāh al-Qurashī and ʿUthmān (رضي الله عنه), there are ten generations. Even six would be extremely unlikely.”
✔ Ibn ʿAdī states:
He used to reside in Naṣībīn and Dār al-Bilād, and he fabricated ḥadīth under the names of trustworthy narrators.
