The Consequence of Disobeying the Messenger ﷺ and the Regret on the Day of Judgment

Derived from:
Monthly al-Ḥadīth, Hazro

“And (mention) the Day when the wrongdoer will bite at his hands (in regret), saying: ‘Oh, would that I had taken a path with the Messenger!’”

(al-Furqān: 27)

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (may Allāh have mercy upon him) explained:
Allāh Almighty has informed in this verse about the regret of the wrongdoer who turned away from the way of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and chose other paths apart from the clear truth brought by the Messenger ﷺ. On the Day of Judgment, he will be extremely regretful, but this regret will not benefit him at all. In utter remorse, he will chew at his hands.

Whether the reason for revelation relates to ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿīṭ or anyone else, the command applies to every wrongdoer who turns away from obedience and adherence to the Prophet ﷺ.

Allāh Almighty says:

(al-Aḥzāb: 66-67)

Thus, every wrongdoer will be extremely regretful on the Day of Judgment and will chew at his hands in despair, saying:

(Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, Vol. 2, pp. 594-595)

Imām Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (may Allāh have mercy upon him) explicitly stated:
The path that provides salvation from the punishment of Allāh is only the path of the Messenger ﷺ.
(See Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, Vol. 8, p. 105)

Therefore, whoever turns away from the path of the Messenger ﷺ and adopts any other way will be among the wrongdoers on the Day of Judgment and will chew at his hands out of regret and sorrow.
