Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq رحمه الله is regarded by the Shia as the sixth Imam in the line of Imamate, which they trace from Sayyiduna ʿAli رضي الله عنه.
He was the son of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, grandson of Imam Zayn al-ʿAbidin, and great-grandson of Sayyiduna Husayn رضي الله عنه.
He had children from different wives. In total, he had ten children — seven sons and three daughters.
