Source: Fatawa Ilmiyyah, Vol. 1 – Principles, Authentication and Investigation of Narrations, Page 619
Question:
Did the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ laugh? Please explain the narration transmitted from Qatadah (rahimahullah), which mentions that Ibn Umar (RA) was asked whether the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ laughed. Additionally, what about Bilal ibn Sa‘d’s statement that they practiced archery, played, laughed, but worshiped during the night? Is this narration authentic?
Narration Reference:
“Qatadah (rahimahullah) narrated that Ibn Umar (RA) was asked: Did the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laugh? He affirmed, even though their faith in their hearts was stronger than mountains. Bilal ibn Sa‘d said: I saw them practicing archery, aiming at targets, playing and laughing with each other, but at night they became devoted in worship.”
(Mishkat al-Masabih, Hadith 7479; Sharh al-Sunnah 12/318)
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, and prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
This narration is mentioned in Sharh al-Sunnah by al-Baghawi (Vol. 12, Page 318, before Hadith 3302) in the wording “Qala Mu‘ammar ‘an Qatadah”, but it is transmitted without a complete chain of narration.
Supporting Evidences for this Concept:
① Sahih Muslim
- Kitab al-Masajid, Bab Fadl al-Julus fi Masalih ba‘d al-Subh, Hadith 670
- A narration in Sahih Muslim affirms the general meaning that the Companions engaged in light-hearted activities without compromising their faith.
② Al-Adab al-Mufrad by al-Bukhari
- Hadith No. 266
- Some aspects of this narration are confirmed by an authentic report in Al-Adab al-Mufrad.
Another supporting narration:
"The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to playfully throw pieces of watermelon (or melon) at each other, but when matters of truth (such as serious affairs or battlefield situations) arose, they became men of courage."
- The chain of this narration is authentic.
(Shahadat: June 2003)
Conclusion:
It is established that the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ (RA) naturally had a cheerful disposition. They:
✔ Played and laughed together, enjoying light-hearted moments.
✔ Maintained seriousness and steadfastness when it came to worship or important matters.
✔ Their faith was extremely strong, likened to mountains in strength.
✔ Their worship included nightly devotion and vigil.
Final Note:
This demonstrates that Islam does not prevent natural joy and leisure, provided it does not interfere with faith, worship, and moral responsibility.
