◈ Introduction: A Message in the Wilderness
In a land without governance or law, where bloodshed and murder were trivial, where the inhabitants resembled wild beasts in their savagery and ignorance, to make such a claim which would ignite opposition among all tribes was no easy feat. Yet that claim triumphed and flourished, despite intense and sustained opposition from millions, solely due to divine support. The radiant virtues and sublime character of the Prophet ﷺ stood out like pure gold amidst sand. His life, marked by simplicity and humility, regardless of power or persecution, reflects a heart completely overtaken by divine sanctity and detached from worldly desires.
The life of the Prophet ﷺ offers the best model for every person, group, and nation. Hence, I shall briefly recount the noble traits of the Prophet ﷺ, who perfectly exemplified the hadith:
"علّمني ربي فأحسن تأديبي" – "My Lord taught me, and He perfected my manners."
◈ Unparalleled Moral Character
The term Khuluq-e-Muhammadi ﷺ has now become a metaphor for expressing the most noble character and manners. Here, I do not aim to discuss the prophetic miracles and unique features of Prophethood, but rather, highlight those simple aspects of his life that every fortunate soul can adopt as a model:❝ لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ ❞
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ you have an excellent example.”
◈ His Upbringing and Lifestyle
The Prophet ﷺ was unlettered, neither reading nor writing, and never had the company of scholars before his Prophethood. Skills like archery, horse riding, poetry, lineage expertise, and eloquence were common pursuits of noble youth in that era. Yet, the Prophet ﷺ did not engage in or express interest in any of these. Despite that, foreign scholars like Professor Siddeau acknowledged:“The Prophet ﷺ was cheerful, sociable, mostly silent, abundant in remembrance of Allah, far from vain talk, abhorring nonsense, possessing the best judgment and intellect.”
◈ Justice, Compassion, and Humility
✔ He treated relatives and strangers equally in justice.✔ He loved the poor and took delight in their company.
✔ He never belittled a poor man due to his poverty nor exalted a king due to his royalty.
✔ He endured the ignorant patiently and never parted from anyone unless the person left first.
✔ He would patch his own shoes and mend his own clothes.
✔ He met enemies with a cheerful face and forgave generously.
◈ Domestic Humility and Service
Imam Ghazali writes that the Prophet ﷺ:✔ Fed animals, tied camels, cleaned the house, milked goats, and shared meals with servants.
✔ He would greet everyone, walk holding hands with companions, and distinguish neither between slave and master.
✔ He attended every invitation, no matter how simple, and ate with gratitude whatever was served.
◈ Simplicity in Living
✔ He never stored food for the next meal.
✔ Often spent nights hungry, eating only dates and water.
✔ His family went months without cooking over fire.
✔ He preferred a simple life and prayed for sustenance just sufficient for a day.
◈ Gentleness with Women and Children
✔ He helped his wives in household chores and honored their needs.✔ He supported his wife Safiyyah رضي الله عنها to mount a camel by kneeling so she could use his knee as a step.
✔ He advised his companions to handle women with gentleness, likening them to glass vessels.
◈ Justice Without Compromise
✔ When a noble woman committed theft, and people sought intercession, he said:“If Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad ﷺ had stolen, I would have cut off her hand.”
✔ In personal matters, he showed mercy; but in matters of divine law, he upheld justice firmly.
◈ Forgiveness Even to Enemies
✔ He forgave the one who killed his daughter Zaynab’s unborn child.✔ He forgave those who attempted to kill him during Salah.
✔ He did not retaliate when he was insulted, wounded, or plotted against.
◈ Truthfulness and Trustworthiness
✔ Even enemies called him “Al-Sadiq” (the Truthful) and “Al-Amin” (the Trustworthy).✔ On the night of migration, he left Ali رضي الله عنه behind to return the entrusted items of his enemies.
◈ A Role Model for All
✔ He participated in archery and horse races, encouraged physical fitness, and led by example.✔ He was modest to the extent that he was never seen unclothed by his wife.
✔ He avoided boasting, corrected wrong beliefs, and maintained transparency between Prophethood and personal opinion.
◈ Shame and Humility
✔ More modest than a veiled virgin girl.✔ Disliked hearing faults of others to avoid ill thoughts.
✔ Declined undue praise and remained deeply humble.
◈ Unmatched Patience and Forbearance
✔ Endured abuses, physical assaults, and plots without seeking revenge.✔ When insulted or threatened, he forgave with grace and generosity.
◈ Conclusion: A Mercy to the Worlds
