The Account of Ḥammād ibn Salamah with the People of Innovation

Source: Monthly Al-Hadith, Hazro

◈ A False Allegation Against Ḥammād ibn Salamah

Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī stated:
“Ḥammād ibn Salamah was initially unaware of such kinds of narrations until he once traveled towards ʿAbbādān. Upon returning, he began narrating them. I believe that Satan emerged from the river and instilled those narrations into him.”
(This is a fabricated narration.)

✿ Authentication and Commentary

This report has been narrated by Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (Vol. 2, p. 676) through the chain:

Ibn Ḥammād → Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ ibn al-Thaljī

Critique of the Chain:

  • The chain is invalid.
  • It includes Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ al-Baghdādī, who is a known liar.
  • Ibn ʿAdī explicitly declared:

“Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Thaljī is a liar. He fabricated narrations and tried to insert them into the books of the Ahl al-Ḥadīth.”
Zakarīyā al-Sājī stated:
“Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ is a liar. He used deceit to support his views and invented false narrations from the scholars of ḥadīth.”

Refer to: Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl (Vol. 3, p. 578)

Al-Dhahabī remarked:
“This Ibn al-Thaljī was not truthful regarding Ḥammād and others. He slandered them. We seek Allāh’s protection.”

Al-Shaykh al-Muʿallimī declared in al-Tankīl (Vol. 1, p. 252) that this narration is fabricated.

✔ The Eminence of Ḥammād ibn Salamah

Ḥammād ibn Salamah was among the senior righteous predecessors. Regarding him, Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said:

“If you see someone criticizing Ḥammād ibn Salamah, then doubt his Islām, for Ḥammād was very harsh against the people of innovation.”

Note: This statement from Imām Aḥmad has not been authentically proven with a sound chain.

Reference: Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ, Vol. 7, p. 450

Due to his status, the people of innovation fabricated stories against him to turn people away from him—especially because he was known to preserve and narrate aḥādīth related to the Attributes of Allāh.

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥibbān wrote in Kitāb al-Thiqāt (Vol. 2, p. 217):
“During his lifetime, no one criticized him except for the Qadariyyah and Jahmiyyah sects, because he used to narrate authentic aḥādīth that the Muʿtazilah denied due to their contradiction of their innovated beliefs.”
