❖ Shar‘i Principles for Teaching and Training Children in Salah ❖

Ḥadīth of the Prophet ﷺ:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and discipline them (if they abandon it) when they are ten, and separate their beds."
[Abū Dāwūd: 495; Tirmidhī: 407; authenticated by al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī]
This noble ḥadīth provides clear educational guidelines to parents regarding the religious upbringing of their children, particularly in relation to Salah.
Parents are instructed to begin teaching Salah when their child reaches the age of seven.
At this stage, gentle encouragement, love, and wisdom should be used to explain the importance and benefits of Salah and to help the child develop the habit of praying.
When the child turns ten and still neglects Salah, parents are permitted to adopt measured discipline.
The term "strike them" in the ḥadīth refers to a light, non-abusive corrective action meant to encourage reform — not harshness or violence.
The goal is to instill seriousness in the child about Salah and to emphasize that it is a non-negotiable obligation in Islam.
Since ten years of age is near the age of puberty, parents are instructed to separate the sleeping arrangements of their children.
This teaches them principles of modesty, personal hygiene, and individual accountability in religious duties.

Teach Salah with love, affection, and explanation of its importance.
✔ At Age 10:
If there is negligence, apply gentle disciplinary action and separate beds to nurture a sense of maturity and responsibility.
