❖ Rulings, Method, and Shar‘i Evidence of Tayammum ❖
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Tayammum is a legislated alternative to wudū’ or ghusl, performed by wiping the face and hands with pure earth, when water is unavailable or its use is harmful. It is a mercy and concession from Allah for believers in difficult situations.
Tayammum is the act of wiping the face and both hands using pure soil, with the intention of purification, in place of ablution (wudū’) or ritual bath (ghusl).
◈ While traveling and water is not accessible.
◈ When access to water endangers life, such as:
– Water not available at home during lockdowns or curfews
– Threat of wild animals or enemies while fetching water
If such a condition persists for years, Tayammum remains valid.
Narrated by Abū Dharr (رضي الله عنه):
“Pure earth is a means of wudū’ for Muslims, even if water is not available for ten years.”
[Abū Dāwūd: 332; Tirmidhī: 124]
Narrated by ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها):
“We went out with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey. When we reached a place called Baydā’ or Dhāt al-Jaysh, I lost my necklace. The Prophet ﷺ halted and the people had no water. Then in the morning, the verse of Tayammum was revealed.”
Upon this, Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr (رضي الله عنه) said:
“O family of Abū Bakr! This is not your first blessing.”
[Bukhārī: 433; Muslim: 367]
Narrated by ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (رضي الله عنه):
“A man became junub (in a state of major impurity) but had no water. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Use earth for Tayammum; it is sufficient for you.’”
[Bukhārī: 344; Muslim: 682]
If a person is ill, weak, or using water could harm or endanger him, Tayammum is allowed.
Narrated by Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما):
“A man bathed during winter and died. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘They killed him — may Allah kill them! Allah made earth sufficient for purification.’”
[Ibn Khuzaymah: 1/83; Ibn Ḥibbān: 1200; Ḥākim: 1/466]
ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (رضي الله عنه) said:
“During the expedition of Dhāt al-Salāsil, I had a nocturnal emission on a cold night, so I performed Tayammum and led the prayer.”
When this was reported to the Prophet ﷺ, he smiled and said nothing.
[Abū Dāwūd: 334]
✔ Make intention (niyyah) for Tayammum
✔ Strike both hands on pure earth
✔ Blow off excess dust
✔ Wipe the face and both hands
Ḥadīth of ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“It was enough for you to do this.” Then he struck the ground, blew off dust, and wiped his face and hands.
[Bukhārī: 347; Muslim: 368]
Narrated by Abū Saʿīd (رضي الله عنه):
“Two men performed Tayammum and prayed. Later, they found water before the prayer time had ended. One repeated his prayer; the other did not. The Prophet ﷺ said:
‘The one who did not repeat his prayer acted according to the Sunnah. The one who repeated it will receive more reward.’”
[Al-Nasāʾī: 433]
﴿فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا﴾
“Then perform Tayammum with pure earth.”
[Al-Nisāʾ: 43]
✔ Tayammum must be done with clean soil
✔ Sand or chalky earth is valid
✔ One Tayammum may be used for multiple prayers, just like wudū’
✔ Tayammum breaks with anything that invalidates wudū’
✔ Repeating Salah after water is found is recommended, not mandatory
Tayammum is a legitimate and merciful alternative to wudū’ or ghusl, permitted in cases of necessity — like illness, injury, or water scarcity. The Qur’an and authentic Sunnah clearly validate this ruling, and its procedure is simple and accessible.
It reflects the flexibility of Islamic law and the mercy of Allah towards His servants.
