❖ Question:
Is an elderly person allowed to perform tayammum (dry ablution) during cold weather, even if water is available — whether or not someone is present to provide hot water?
And can such an elderly person, who has difficulty walking and weak eyesight, perform ʿIshāʾ prayer at home, whether or not someone is available to accompany him?
❖ Answer:
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd...
① Ruling on Tayammum for the Elderly in Winter
◈ If the elderly person is in good health, then he must perform wuḍūʾ (ablution) as prayer is not valid without it.
◈ However, if he is ill or fears harm or increased sickness due to cold water, then tayammum is allowed.
➤ If hot water is accessible or someone can help provide it, he should use it for wuḍūʾ.
➤ If he cannot heat water, and ablution becomes difficult or harmful, he is permitted to perform tayammum.
"فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا"
“And if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth.”
(Sūrah al-Nisāʾ: 43, Sūrah al-Māʾidah: 6)
✔ Therefore, when ablution causes hardship and no one is present to assist, tayammum is permissible.
② Ruling on Praying ʿIshāʾ at Home for the Elderly
◈ Praying in congregation in the mosque is highly virtuous.
However, an elderly person who faces:
- Difficulty walking,
- Weak eyesight,
- Or general hardship,
is excused from attending the mosque and may pray at home.
“Whoever hears the adhān and does not come to the mosque — his prayer is not accepted, except if he has a valid excuse.”
(Sunan Ibn Mājah: 793, Sunan Dāraquṭnī: 1061, Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān: 2064)
✔ Even if someone is available to take him, but the physical strain remains, he is excused.
✔ If no one is available to help, then praying at home is clearly permitted.
This practice is also proven from the Companions, who prayed at home due to valid reasons.

❖ Summary
✔ Tayammum is allowed for an elderly person if wuḍūʾ causes difficulty or harm and there is no access to hot water.
✔ Praying at home is permissible for someone facing hardship, especially at night, and particularly when assistance is unavailable or insufficient.
