Takbir During Dhul-Hijjah and Tashreeq: Virtues and Rulings

Importance of Takbirat During the Days of Tashreeq and the First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ Divine Command to Remember Allah

Allah Almighty says:

وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَعْدُودَاتٍ

“And remember Allah during the appointed days.”
[Al-Baqarah: 203]

According to Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما), the term “Ayyām Maʿdūdāt” (appointed days) refers to the Days of Tashreeq.
[Sahih al-Bukhari: 969]

Imam Shawkānī also held this view.
[As-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/320]

❖ Command for Women to Participate in Takbir

Umm ʿAtiyyah (رضي الله عنها) narrated:

كنا نؤمر أن نخرج الحيض فيكبرن بتكبيرهم
“We were commanded to bring out even menstruating women (on Eid day) so they could say Takbir along with the people.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari: 298]

This shows that participation in the Takbir was not limited to those performing Salah but extended to all Muslims, including women, highlighting its collective significance.

❖ Takbir During the Days of Tashreeq

✿ The Days of Tashreeq are the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.
✿ Saying Takbir loudly during these days is legislated (Mashruʿ) and recommended by scholars based on sound evidences.

❖ Takbir During the First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

➊ Allah says:

وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَاتٍ
“And mention the name of Allah on known days.”
[Al-Hajj: 28]

Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) stated that the “Ayyām Maʿlūmāt” (known days) refer to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.
[Sahih al-Bukhari: 969]

❖ Virtues of These Ten Days

Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

ما من أيام أعظم عند الله...
“There are no days greater or more beloved to Allah for righteous deeds than these ten days, so increase in them the recitation of: Lā ilāha illā Allāh, Allāhu Akbar, and Al-ḥamdu lillāh.”
[Musnad Ahmad: 2/75 | ʿAbd bin Ḥumayd: 807]

Imam al-Bukhārī records that Ibn ʿUmar and Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنهم) would go out to the markets during the ten days saying Takbir, and the people would join them in their Takbir.
[Sahih al-Bukhari: 969]

❖ Scholarly Discussions on the Specific Days

There is scholarly disagreement on the exact meanings of “Ayyām Maʿdūdāt” and “Ayyām Maʿlūmāt”, discussed extensively in books of Fiqh such as:

  • Al-Majmūʿ: 8/350
  • Al-Ḥāwī: 4/366
  • Al-Mabsūṭ: 4332
  • Tuḥfat al-Fuqahāʾ: 1/287
  • Al-Ikhtiyār: 1/81
  • Al-Kāfī by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr: p.145

Despite these differences, the conclusion is that abundant Dhikr and Takbir should be practiced during both:

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah
The Days of Tashreeq (11–13 Dhul-Hijjah)

❖ Determining the Start and End of Takbir

Imam Ibn Ḥajar has detailed the rulings on the specific times and manner of Takbir in Fatḥ al-Bārī (3/141). Scholars have also discussed the timing in:

  • Al-Majmūʿ: 5/36
  • Al-Mabsūṭ: 2/42
  • Badāʾiʿ al-Ṣanāʾiʿ: 1/195
  • Al-Umm: 1/400

Although no explicit Hadith from the Prophet ﷺ defines the starting point, the most authentic view is traced back to:

ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) and Ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه) who said:

Takbir should begin from Fajr of the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah until ʿAsr of the 13th.
[Al-Awsaṭ by Ibn al-Mundhir: 4/300 | Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/621]

✅ Conclusion

Takbir is legislated and highly recommended during both:
◈ The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah
 ◈ The Days of Tashreeq (11–13 Dhul-Hijjah)

✔ It is an act of collective worship, meant to glorify Allah and promote a spirit of remembrance in the Muslim community.

✔ The best and most authentic practice is to begin Takbir from Fajr of 9th Dhul-Hijjah and continue until ʿAsr of 13th Dhul-Hijjah.
