Swearing by Other Than Allah

Written by: Maulana Abul Hasan Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani

Question:

Some people swear by their children, saints, and righteous people during conversations. Is this permissible?

Answer:

Islamic teachings prohibit swearing by anything other than Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) declared that swearing by others besides Allah is an act of disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Sa’d bin Abdullah narrates:

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) heard a man swearing by the Kaaba. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said to him: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, 'Whoever swears by other than Allah has committed disbelief or shirk.'"

[Abu Dawood, Book of Oaths and Vows: Chapter on Dislike of Swearing by Fathers, Hadith 2351; Tirmidhi: 1535]

It is narrated from Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that:

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard him swear by his father in a caravan, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. Whoever wants to swear should swear by Allah or remain silent."

[Abu Dawood, Book of Oaths and Vows: Chapter on Dislike of Swearing by Fathers, Hadith 3249; Bukhari: 6648; Muslim: 1646]

↰ The above authentic Hadith clearly indicates that swearing by anything other than Allah is haram (forbidden) and an act of shirk. It is imperative to avoid such practices. Those who commonly use expressions like "I swear by my children," "I swear by the saint," "I swear by the spiritual guide," "I swear by the Sayyid," "I swear by my parents," or "I swear by love" in their conversations should seriously and thoughtfully reflect on the teachings of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and completely refrain from using these forbidden and unlawful oaths.
