Discussion on Sutrah (Barrier in Prayer)

Shayṭān seeks to corrupt a person’s prayer by casting whispers into his heart and distracting his thoughts. Therefore, the Sharīʿah has instructed the worshipper to place a sutrah (barrier) in front of him to protect against satanic interference.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى سُتْرَةٍ فَلْيَدْنُ مِنْهَا، لَا يَقْطَعِ الشَّيْطَانُ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاتَهُ»
“When one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him stand close to it, lest Shayṭān interrupt his prayer.”
Reference: Abū Dāwūd, Book of Prayer, 695 – Ṣaḥīḥ

Therefore, negligence in this matter should be avoided.

A sutrah may be a stick, spear, wall, pillar, tree, or anything that serves as a barrier. It must be upright (vertical), not laid horizontally. In some places, people place a long bamboo horizontally in front of them, raised only one or one-and-a-half feet above the ground—this is incorrect.

Imām Ibn Ḥibbān رحمه الله states regarding the sutrah:

«يَجِبُ أَنْ يَكُونَ بِالطُّولِ لَا بِالْعَرْضِ»
“It must be upright, not horizontal.”
Reference: Ibn Ḥibbān, before ḥadīth: 2377

Importance of the Sutrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُكُمْ يُصَلِّي فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتُرُهُ إِذَا كَانَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِثْلُ آخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ»
“When one of you stands to pray and there is before him something like the back of a saddle, that is sufficient as a barrier.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Prayer, 510

On another occasion, he ﷺ said:

«لَا تُصَلِّ إِلَّا إِلَى سُتْرَةٍ»
“Do not pray except facing a sutrah.”
Reference: Ibn Khuzaymah: 3/305, 775; Ibn Ḥibbān: 2362 – authenticated by al-Albānī and Shuʿayb al-Arna’ūṭ

❀ Praying with a sutrah is highly recommended, but it is not obligatory, because it is also established that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sometimes prayed without a sutrah.

Once, I and a boy from Banū Hāshim arrived riding a donkey while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying. We dismounted, left the donkey grazing, and joined the prayer. Someone asked: “Was there a spear in front of him?” He replied: “No.”
Reference: Musnad Abī Yaʿlā: 2/425, 2417 – Ṣaḥīḥ

Objectives and Benefits of the Sutrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى سُتْرَةٍ فَلْيَدْنُ مِنْهَا، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَمُرُّ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا»
“When one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him stand close to it, for Shayṭān passes between him and it.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān: 2375 – Ḥasan

He ﷺ also said:

«فَإِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِثْلُ آخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ قَطَعَ صَلَاتَهُ الْحِمَارُ وَالْمَرْأَةُ وَالْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ، الْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ شَيْطَانٌ»
“If there is not before him something like the back of a saddle, then a donkey, a (mature) woman, or a black dog passing in front will invalidate his prayer; the black dog is Shayṭān.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Prayer, 510

Thus, if a person has no sutrah, the prayer is invalidated by the passing of any one of these three. Other things do not invalidate the prayer, as there is no clear authentic evidence regarding them.

Stopping One Who Passes in Front

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى شَيْءٍ يَسْتُرُهُ مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَأَرَادَ أَحَدٌ أَنْ يَجْتَازَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَلْيَدْفَعْهُ، فَإِنْ أَبَى فَلْيُقَاتِلْهُ، فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ شَيْطَانٌ»
“When one of you prays facing something that screens him from people, and someone tries to pass in front of him, he should stop him. If he persists, he should resist him, for he is Shayṭān.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 509; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 505

Passing behind the sutrah causes no harm.
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 499

Height of the Sutrah

When asked about the sutrah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«مِثْلُ مُؤْخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ»
“Like the back of a saddle.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 499

❀ ʿAṭāʾ رحمه الله said:
“The back of a saddle is about a hand-span or slightly more; thus, a hand-span is sufficient as a sutrah.”
Reference: Abū Dāwūd, 686 – Ṣaḥīḥ

❀ Prayer may be offered behind a person who is sitting or lying down, and his movement does not affect the prayer, as Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها was lying down while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed behind her.
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 513; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 512

❀ Using an animal as a sutrah is also permissible.
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 502

❀ The narration stating that one may draw a line on the ground if nothing is available as a sutrah is weak, as declared by al-Albānī and other scholars.
Reference: Ibn Mājah: 943; Abū Dāwūd: 689

Distance Between the Worshipper and the Sutrah

The sutrah should be placed very close to the place of prostration.

“There was only enough space for a sheep to pass between the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and the wall.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 496; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 508

Is Sutrah Required in the Mosque?

❀ A sutrah is required everywhere—whether in the mosque or the open land, during travel or residence, in obligatory or voluntary prayers.

Sayyidunā Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ رضي الله عنه would always pray behind a pillar in the mosque. When asked why, he said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying here.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 502; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 509

On the day of ʿĪd, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that a spear be planted in front of him, and he prayed facing it, with people behind him. He did the same while traveling.
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 494; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 501

❀ Some people neglect the sutrah and pray in the back rows or near doorways despite space being available in front—this is incorrect. One should pray in the front rows, near a wall or corner, or at least away from pathways.

The Imam’s Sutrah Is Sufficient for the Followers

Imām al-Bukhārī رحمه الله established a chapter:

“The sutrah of the Imam is the sutrah for those behind him.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, before ḥadīth: 493

If the imam has a sutrah, then passing in front of the congregation does not cause harm, even if the followers themselves do not have individual sutrahs.
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 495; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 503

“I arrived in Minā riding a donkey while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying. I passed in front of part of the row, dismounted, left the donkey, joined the row, and no one objected.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 493; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 504

Sin of Passing in Front of a Worshipper

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْمَارُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ الْمُصَلِّي مَاذَا عَلَيْهِ، لَكَانَ أَنْ يَقِفَ أَرْبَعِينَ خَيْرًا لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَمُرَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ»
“If the one who passes in front of a praying person knew the sin upon him, he would prefer to stand for forty (days, months, or years) rather than pass in front of him.”
Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 510; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 507

The narrator was unsure whether forty days, months, or years were meant.

Passing in Front When There Is No Sutrah

There is no authentic and explicit ḥadīth specifying a permissible distance for passing in front of a praying person who has no sutrah. The Prophet ﷺ issued a general prohibition and severe warning regarding passing in front of a worshipper.

Therefore, adherence to the Sunnah demands that one should not pass in front of a praying person under any circumstance.
