A Companion رضي الله عنه narrated:
كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَسَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَقْرَأُ: قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ، حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا، فَقَالَ: قَدْ بَرِئَ هَذَا مِنَ الشِّرْكِ، ثُمَّ سِرْنَا، فَسَمِعَ آخَرَ يَقْرَأُ: قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ، فَقَالَ: أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ غُفِرَ لَهُ.
“I was traveling with the Prophet ﷺ, and he heard a man reciting ‘Qul yā ayyuhal-kāfirūn’ (Surah Al-Kāfirūn) until he completed it. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘This man is free from shirk (polytheism).’
Then we continued, and he heard another man reciting ‘Qul huwa Allāhu Aḥad’ (Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ). The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘This man has been forgiven.’”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite Surah Al-Kāfirūn in the first rak‘ah and Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ in the second rak‘ah of the Sunnah prayers before Fajr.
Sahih Muslim: 726
After performing Ṭawāf of the Ka‘bah, the Prophet ﷺ would pray two rak‘ahs behind Maqām Ibrāhīm and recite Surah Al-Kāfirūn in the first rak‘ah and Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ in the second.

Narration of Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh رضي الله عنه:
إِنَّ رَجُلًا قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيِ الْفَجْرِ، فَقَرَأَ فِي الْأُولَى: قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ، حَتَّى انْقَضَتِ السُّورَةُ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: هَذَا عَبْدٌ عَرَفَ رَبَّهُ، وَقَرَأَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ، حَتَّى انْقَضَتِ السُّورَةُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: هَذَا عَبْدٌ آمَنَ بِرَبِّهِ.
A man stood and performed the two rak‘ahs of Fajr (Sunnah). In the first rak‘ah, he recited Surah Al-Kāfirūn till its end. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“This is a servant who recognized his Lord.”
In the second rak‘ah, he recited Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ till its end. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“This is a servant who believed in his Lord.”
Ṭalḥah رضي الله عنه then said:
“I love to recite these two surahs in these two rak‘ahs.”
Sahih Ibn Ḥibbān: 6/213, Hadith 2460 – Chain Hasan (Sound)
In Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār by Imām al-Ṭaḥāwī (1/298), it is mentioned:
“هَذَا عَبْدٌ عَرَفَ رَبَّهُ.”
“This is a servant who truly recognized his Lord.”
Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله graded this narration as Hasan (sound) in Natā’ij al-Afkār (1/503–504).

① Recitation of Surah Al-Kāfirūn Declares Freedom from Shirk (Polytheism)

② The Prophet ﷺ Recited It in the Sunnah of Fajr Prayer

⑤ Explanation from Classical Scholars
