Supplication at Qur’an Completion in Tarawih: Ruling and Scholarly Views

Ruling on Supplication at the Completion of the Qur’an in Tarawih and Scholarly Opinions
(Excerpt: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam)

Question:

What is the ruling regarding making supplication at the time of completing the Qur’an during Tarawih prayer?

Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Practice of the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions رضي الله عنهم:

❖ To my knowledge, neither the Noble Prophet ﷺ nor the Companions رضي الله عنهم have been reported to have made supplication upon completing the Qur’an during prayer.

❖ The most authentic report on this matter is the practice of Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه, who:

  • When he completed the Qur’an, would gather his family members and make supplication.
  • This supplication was made outside of prayer, not within it.

Problem in Making It a Regular Practice:

❖ Since this practice is not established from the Sunnah, one issue with making it a regular, organized practice is that:

  • In certain mosques, special programs are arranged for it, leading to large gatherings of men and women.
  • Upon leaving the mosque after prayer, free mixing between men and women often occurs, which is clearly observable.

Opinions of Some Scholars:

❖ Some scholars have stated that making supplication upon completing the Qur’an is recommended (mustaḥabb).

❖ If the imam completes the Qur’an during the last part of the night while standing in prayer, and makes a special supplication in place of the qunūt during Witr, there is no harm in that.

❖ This is because qunūt is legislated in any case.

Allah knows best.
