✦ Identifying Truth and Falsehood Between Sunni and Shia Hadith Sources ✦
Scholars from Ahl al-Sunnah often assert that the Hadith compilations of the Shia are based on fabrications, while Shia scholars claim that the Hadith books of the Sunnis are filled with lies.
In such a conflicting environment, how can a common Muslim determine which group is upon the truth and whose tafsir of the Qur'an is trustworthy? Kindly provide guidance on this issue.
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakeel Nāṣir حفظه الله
For the one who sincerely desires guidance and is concerned about their afterlife, identifying the correct path is not difficult, provided they genuinely seek the truth and turn to Allah with sincerity.
This is why a Muslim repeatedly prays in every ṣalāh:
اِهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
“Guide us to the Straight Path.”
And Allah ﷻ promises in the Qur’an:
"وَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا"
(Surah al-ʿAnkabūt: 69)
“And those who strive in Our path—We shall surely guide them to Our ways.”
This verse makes it clear that sincere efforts in search of truth are always met with divine guidance.
In our age, access to knowledge has become incredibly easy.
A person can, from the comfort of their home, study the beliefs, proofs, and commentaries of different schools of thought, compare their methods, and weigh them against the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.
Even a common man, if he pursues truth sincerely, will be able to discern which group is more firmly grounded in authentic texts and which relies on weak, contradictory, or fabricated sources.
It is incorrect to assume that the general public is entirely ignorant.
In worldly matters, people easily distinguish between genuine and counterfeit products—even in minute transactions.
But when it comes to religious matters, many become negligent, relying blindly on scholars without verifying what is right or wrong.
Often, people seek fatwas that suit their desires, using scholars as a way to justify sinful actions.
This calls for a wake-up call, urging people to be as serious about religion as they are about worldly matters.
✔ Whoever genuinely seeks the truth, Allah ﷻ will certainly guide him to it.
✔ In today’s time, one can study and verify different views easily.
✔ Therefore, instead of blindly following any group’s claim, one should:
◈ Investigate both sides,
◈ Study with sincerity and objectivity,
◈ Use the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah as the decisive criterion,
◈ And ask Allah ﷻ continuously for guidance and discernment.
