Sunnahs of Fitrah: Is There a Disagreement Between Imams Bukhari and Muslim?

Source: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❀ Question:

Is there a difference between Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim regarding the Hadith of the Sunan al-Fitrah? Imam Muslim mentions ten, while Imam Bukhari mentions five. Did Imam Bukhari also affirm the ten Sunan?

❀ Answer:

The narrations concerning the Sunan al-Fitrah (natural acts of cleanliness and grooming in Islam) do not specify a fixed number. Different narrations report varying numbers of these practices.

In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, there is:
  • One narration mentioning one Sunnah,
  • Another mentioning three,
  • And yet another mentioning five Sunan al-Fitrah.

Similarly, in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:
  • One narration reports five,
  • And another reports ten.

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar quotes Imam Ibn al-ʿArabī as stating that when all relevant narrations are compiled, the number of Sunan al-Fitrah reaches up to thirty.

Thus, it is incorrect to claim a contradiction between Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim. Rather, the variation is due to the diversity of narrations and the differing numbers reported therein—not an actual disagreement.
