Question:
What is the Sunnah method of rising from prostration during prayer – with straight palms or inverted hands?
Source: Aḥkām wa Masā’il, Ṣalāh Section, Vol. 1, p.191
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
When rising from rukūʿ or sujūd (bowing or prostration) while using the hands for support, two methods are known:
① Using the straight palms to support oneself while rising.
② Using the inverted palms (like the manner of kneading dough) for support while rising.
Among these, the second method (using inverted palms) is proven from the Sunnah.
Evidences:
- Ṣifat Ṣalāt an-Nabī ﷺ
- Arnaʾūṭ’s commentary on Zād al-Maʿād (Vol. 1, p. 233)
From these references, it is clear that the Prophet ﷺ would rise from prostration by supporting himself with inverted hands.
